FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kennesaw State (16-37) could not hinder the early burst from FGCU (33-19) as the Eagles took Saturday's game 5-0 to conclude the regular season.
The Owls will wait to see if they did enough to make it into the ASUN Single Elimination round as they sit tied for eighth with Austin Peay at 8-16. The initial tiebreaker is head-to-head records but these teams did not face each other this season. The secondary tiebreaker falls to the team with the superior RPI. The refreshed RPI rankings will come out Sunday.
Here's how it happened:
The Eagles jumped out to a speedy lead as they plated two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.
In the home half of the first inning, FGCU scored another to take a three-run lead. The run came with a bit of controversy with a close play at the plate from the sacrifice fly to right field.
FGCU would stack it on in the second inning with three runs scored to go up by five.
The Black and Gold threatened in the third inning, getting two runners on with just one out.
Stella Henry poked a ball through the middle and
Kassidy Amerson-Fox drew a walk. The runners were stranded but provided the most promising inning to that point.
Macie Howes showed off her defensive prowess yet again as she gunned down a runner trying to steal second to end the fourth inning. It's her 12
th runner caught stealing on the season.
Kennesaw State was unable to register runs on the board in the 5-0 FGCU final.
