STATESBORO, Ga. – Kennesaw State baseball dropped an in-state matchup at Georgia Southern Tuesday night by a score of 7-4 inside J. I. Clements Stadium. The Owls (9-8) are back in action this weekend with Atlantic Sun Conference play beginning Friday night at North Alabama.
KSU brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but the Eagles were able to escape the jam. The loss snapped the Owls' two-game win streak over Georgia Southern.
Kennesaw State used six different pitchers in the contest.
Caden Carroll made the first start of his collegiate career and worked two scoreless innings. The freshman stuck out one batter in the outing.
Bo Rhudy and Nolan Sliver followed in relief and threw one and two innings, respectively.
Halton Hardy made his fourth appearance of the season and tossed two innings. He struck out two batters and allowed one run.
Brooks Rosser and Daniel Powell combined to throw the eighth.
The Owls' offense produced 10 hits and were led by Nick Hassan who finished 3-for-5.
Hassan continued his hot streak with a double, RBI and run scored. The catcher has also hit safely in five of his last six appearances.
Donovan Cash had a strong night at the dish with a 3-for-5 performance. The first baseman doubled and drove in one run on the night.
Brayden Eidson went 2-for-5 with a double and RBI. He has now posted six multi-hit games this season.
Other notables included Spencer Hanson (1-for-4, walk and RBI) and Jamarie Brooks (1-for-4, run scored).
The Owls scored three runs in the third to move ahead. Shamaar McDuffie walked and was followed by back-to-back singles from Eidson and Hassan. Hanson had an RBI ground out to short and Cash reached on an error which plated the third run of the frame.
Georgia Southern hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
KSU tied the game with some aggressive baserunning in the top of the fourth. Brooks scored on a ground ball back to the pitcher as he dove around the throw to home plate.
The Eagles took the lead with a run in the fifth and added on with a run in the seventh. This moved the score to 6-4.
A bases-loaded walk in the eighth gave Georgia Southern a 7-4 lead, which held as the final.
Kennesaw State baseball is back in action this Friday with its ASUN opener at North Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Mike D. Lane Field.
