KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State baseball dropped its home opener to Mercer by a score of 9-3 inside Stillwell Stadium. The Owls (1-3) travel to Wofford (3-0) tomorrow for a second midweek battle.
Daniel Powell made his first career start and tossed 1.2 innings. The freshman worked out of a baseball-loaded jam in the first and recorded one strikeout in the frame. He also threw a runner out at the plate on an attempted safety squeeze. Powell allowed three hits and one unearned run this afternoon.
Kennesaw State's offense posted five hits on the afternoon with two going for extra bases. Spencer Hanson was 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks. Isaac Bouton, Zac Corbin and Brayden Eidson also added hits.
Donovan Cash pinch hit in the eighth and blasted his first home run of the season. The home run was the 20th of Cash's career.
The Bears scored one run in the second and third innings to hold a 2-0 lead.
Mercer added on with six in the fourth to break the game open, 8-0.
Hanson led off the KSU fourth with a triple and scored on an error by the Bears.
Kennesaw State threatened in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and one out. Jackson Chirello worked a full count walk to bring the score to 8-2.
Mercer scored once in the eighth but a pinch-hit home run from Cash made the score 9-3, which held as the final.
Kennesaw State baseball is back in action tomorrow for its second midweek in-a-row. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. as the Owls travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford.
