Ninth-Inning Rally Gives KSU Victory at Wofford

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Trailing by two with one out in the ninth, Kennesaw State baseball scored four runs to complete a come-from-behind victory and earn a 4-2 win over Wofford on Wednesday evening. The results mark the first time the Owls (2-3) have defeated the Terriers (3-1) at Russell C. King Field.

Jackson Chirello laced a double in the final frame and scored on a single from Donovan Cash. After an infield single from Jamarie Brooks put two runners on, Nick Hassan ripped the go-ahead double that scored two and gave Kennesaw State a 3-2 advantage.

Zac Corbin followed with a single to right field that added an insurance run and gave Kennesaw State a 4-2 lead which held as the final.

The Kennesaw State pitching staff combined for a season-high 12 strikeouts in the contest and kept the Terriers (3-1) off-balanced at the plate. This marked the most punchouts the staff has produced in a single game since April 12, 2023, at Mercer.

Nolan Sliver made his first start and second appearance on the mound this year. The sophomore tossed two innings and surrendered one run on two hits. Sliver struck out two Terriers on the evening.

Brayden Eidson entered in the third and threw the next five frames. The left-hander gave up one run on four hits. He struck out five which included striking-out-the-side in the sixth.

Ryan Renfroe (1-0) pitched the eighth inning for Kennesaw State and posted two big strikeouts in his scoreless frame. The freshman earned his first collegiate victory in the contest.

Tanner Franklin came on in the ninth and struck-out-the-side to seal the game. The sophomore secured the first save of his young career with a dominant performance.

Offensively, KSU collected nine hits. Brooks, Cash, Chirello, Corbin, Hassan and Spencer Hanson all added base knocks in the contest.

Hassan delivered the go-ahead double in the top of the ninth to put Kennesaw State ahead, 3-2. The catcher produced his first multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 performance.

Chirello finished with multiple hits as the sophomore ended 2-for-4 with a double. The outfielder also scored KSU's first run in the ninth inning.

Corbin collected a 2-for-5 night with an RBI in the top of the ninth. This marked his first multi-hit game on the year.

Cash ripped a ninth inning single up the middle for KSU's first RBI of the game. The first baseman went 1-for-3 with a walk and extended his hitting streak to four games.

Wofford jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the first. The Terriers added on with a score in the fifth.

The Owls rallied for four in the ninth to jump ahead 4-2. This marked Kennesaw State's second comeback win this season when the team trailed in the eighth inning or later.

Kennesaw State baseball is back in action this weekend with a series at No. 10 Clemson. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. inside Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
