Owls Fall in High Scoring Contest at Lipscomb 101-95

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a very competitive game that was back and forth all night long and featured 18 ties and 12 lead changes, Lipscomb made the final punch to rally past Kennesaw State 101-95 in Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday night from Allen Arena.
 
STAT OF THE GAME: Kennesaw State was whistled for 30 fouls in the game, leading to 40 total free throw attempts for the Bisons. Lipscomb sank 32 of its 40 attempts for 80%, while the Owls were 18-of-27 (66.7%), a difference of 14 points.
 
THE FIRST HALF: Neither team led by more than four in the opening 20 minutes. A Simeon Cottle trey put KSU up 17-13, before the home team reeled off the next six points to go back up two. The game was tied six more times over the next nine minutes, and a three-point play from Terrell Burden would give the Owls a 43-40 edge going into halftime.
 
THE SECOND HALF: A trio of threes in the opening five minutes gave the Owls their largest lead of the game at 58-49. KSU led 63-55 with 13:44 left on a jumper by Rongie Gordon, before Lipscomb climbed back into the contest with a 6-0 spurt. The Owls still held onto the lead for the next seven minutes, until a three-point play and a banked-in three-pointer at the shot clock buzzer gave Lipscomb an 80-76 lead with 5:24 to play. Burden would give KSU the lead back twice more, the last at 89-88, while his layup at 1:49 tied the game at 91-91. After the teams traded baskets, KSU missed a shot on their possession, and the Bisons would sink eight free throws in the final 65 seconds to close out the win.
 
NOTES 
-Burden posted his third 30+ point game of the season with 33 on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor, and 12-of-16 at the free throw line. The ASUN's leader in assists, he added seven in Saturday's game.
-Freshman RJ Johnson scored a career-high 19 in his second career start, while adding six assists. Also in double-figures was Demond Robinson with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
-As a team, the Owls 48.5% (32-of-66) from the floor and 13-of-31 (41.9%) from three-point range.

NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls return to Kennesaw for their final two home games of the regular season, starting with a Valentine's Day contest against Jacksonville on Wednesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
