Early Goals Send JSU Past Owls Saturday Night

Story Links

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – An early barrage from the Gamecocks fended the off the Owls Saturday night with a 4-1 final on the road.

"For us, it was a game of inconsistency," coach Chris Cahill said. "We showed up thinking we could capitalize on what we did Sunday, and you have to give credit to JSU, they took advantage of that. We showed some fight in the second half but it was too little too late and that what happens when you show up late to a game like that. Now we have to show up and do what we can to make the Conference USA tournament."

First Half
Through the first 15 minutes of the contest, Jacksonville State controlled a large portion of possession and control. With just under 30 minutes left, the Gamecocks were able to net the first goal of the evening. They were able to do so after converting a cross into the box and winning the scramble.

Roughly ten minutes later, JSU added another goal going up 2-0 over the Owls. A miraculous shot from over 20 feet away was sent just feet over the diving hands of Bernal.

At the 17-minute mark, The Gamecocks ambushed the Owls for another goal, grasping the game with a 3-0 lead.

The Gamecocks went into the break with a 9-1 shot advantage.

Second Half
With nearly 20 minutes left, Tianna Rivera notched the Owls first goal to chip the deficit to just two scores. It's her seventh of the season, distancing her as the leading goal scorer for the Owls. The graduate was able to outrun two Gamecock defenders on her way to the goal, beating the keeper after a dive to her right.

River continues her tear as she has now scored five goals over the last five matches. It's the highest scoring five game stretch by any Owl since Brittney Reed in 2015.

Physicality was the theme of the match with 27 fouls combined, marking a season high for KSU.

After several consecutive stoppages, JSU was able to convert another goal, taking the 4-1 lead.

The Owls' comeback was held off as JSU defeated the Owls 4-1.

Next Up:
