LAS CRUCES, N.M. – An early goal from the Aggies dampened the Owls in the 2-0 decision Sunday afternoon on the west coast.
"I thought we had enough chances in the first half to finish the game," coach
Chris Cahill said. "Unfortunately, it wasn't our best game overall and NMSU capitalized and showed us why they were the league winners from last year. We are fully capable of making a strong push to finish out the season and it should be exciting when we focus on ourselves. We are a fun team and we will find a way to extend our season."
First Half
Five minutes in, the Aggies were able to notch the first goal of the game as they launched a shot nearly 40 yards from the goal, taking a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later,
Aly Bryan nearly tied the game as it took a herculean save from New Mexico State's keeper to prevent the score. Bryan beat her defender in the box toward the right of the keeper, but the deflected shot couldn't find its way in the goal.
Most of the threats came from Bryan and
Tianna Rivera as they both secured two shots (on goal) in the first 20 minutes of the half.
Neither side recorded any substitutions prior to the hydration break in the first half.
Although the Aggies had the one goal lead, it was a competitive first half on the stat sheet as it ended with nine shots combined in the first 45 minutes The Owls led the half in shots on goal with three compared to the Aggies one.
Second Half
Consistent possession was tough to come by in the first 15 minutes as both teams struggled to keep the ball at their feet, shifting possession every few passes.
Alana Nesbit manufactured her own offense just under the 30-minute mark as she dashed past two defenders to get the first shot on goal of the half for KSU. She sliced between two Aggies but was denied by the keeper, being just inches away from the equalizer.
At the 10-minute mark, New Mexico State was able to covert another goal on the counterattack to take the 2-0 advantage.
