CONWAY, Ark. – After Kennesaw State's
Terrell Burden tied the score with a minute left, Central Arkansas scored the next eight points of the game, and made 9-of-10 at the free throw line in the last 22 seconds to hand the Owls a 92-87 setback on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action from the Farris Center. The loss dropped the Owls to 13-8 overall, and into a tie for fourth in the league standings with UCA at 4-3.
STAT OF THE GAME: UCA scored 54 second half points and shot 57.1% (16-of-28) from the floor after halftime. That included a 5-of-12 performance from three-point range after the Owls held them to just 2-of-15 in the opening 20 minutes.
THE FIRST HALF: KSU led the entire first half, as both teams were hot from the floor to start.
Jamel King and
Demond Robinson did the early lifting for the Owls, scoring the team's first 10 points. Midway through the first half, a 12-3 spurt by KSU, during which five different Owls scored, gave them their largest lead of the afternoon at 34-22 with 5:15 on the clock. Three free throws from UCA to end the half made the score 43-38 in favor of the Owls.
THE SECOND HALF: The Owls held onto the lead for the majority of the second half, but a 5-0 run by the home team gave UCA its first lead of the game, 63-62 with 9:27 to play. The lead would change hands six more times until a 4-0 run gave the Bears a 78-73 advantage with 3:35 on the clock.
Demond Robinson would respond for KSU, scoring down below before then adding a pair of free throws on the next trip. Burden's layup with 1:33 left put KSU up 79-78, before UCA countered with a three to go back up two. Again Burden made a play, drawing a foul and sinking two with 43 seconds left to make the score 81-81 with a minute to play. Burden nearly stole the Bears pass inside to the post, leaping up to knock it away, but Javion Guy-King managed to pick up the ball and score from point blank range for an 83-81 lead with 43 seconds on the clock. KSU missed a three on their next trip, and UCA came up with the rebound and was fouled, leading to the first two of their game-ending 10 trips to the free throw line.
NOTES
-Robinson led all players with a team-high 20 points while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.
-Also in double-figures for KSU was Burden with 19,
Jamel King with 14, and
Simeon Cottle with 16, including a pair of three-pointers in the final eight seconds.
-Robinson became the sixth Owl to grab 500 career rebounds at KSU (D1 era), as he currently stands with 504 in his three years with the Black and Gold.
-KSU shot 48.3% (28-of-58) from the floor, 35.5% (11-of-31) from three-point range and a season-high 83.3% (20-of-24) at the free throw line.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls are home for a two-game homestand, starting with a Thursday, Feb. 1 contest against Bellarmine at 7:30 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
