NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – With six seconds remaining, Charleston Southern connected on a 48-yard field goal to defeat Kennesaw State football by a score of 13-10 on Saturday night at Buccaneer Field. The loss snapped the Owls' (1-4) five-game win streak over the Bucs (2-3).
Jonathan Murphy ended the night with 76 rushing yards on 26 attempts while going 8-of-16 through the air for 85 yards. The Los Angeles native scored on a rushing attempt in the third quarter to move into third place in program history for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (23).
Murphy also moved into second place all-time for rushing yards (1,639) by a quarterback trailing only
Chandler Burks (2015-2018).
Isaac Foster posted three receptions for 28 yards to move into third place in the KSU record book for receiving yards (704). Foster has now caught a pass in seven-straight games.
Jordan Miles reached a milestone during the contest as the junior registered his 100th career tackle. The Indianapolis native ended the night with two tackles (one solo).
Markeith Montgomery led the KSU defense with a career-high nine tackles (eight solo). The senior also set a personal best with three tackles for loss.
Charleston Southern scored on its first drive to take a 7-0 lead, but that's all the Owl defense allowed throughout the remainder of the half.
Kennesaw State had a chance to get on the board in the second quarter, but a missed field goal kept the score 7-0 at halftime.
The KSU offense moved the ball down field to begin the third quarter as Foster returned the opening kickoff 32 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, Murphy connected with
Carson Kent for a 25-yard gain through the air. He later found
Tykeem Wallace for an 18-yard reception that moved the ball to the CSU 7-yard line.
Charleston Southern stalled the KSU offense which brought on
Jacob Ulrich for a 20-yard field goal attempt. The freshman converted and notched the first successful kick of his career. This pulled the game to 7-3 in favor of the Bucs.
On the ensuing drive, CSU drove down the field and converted on a 34-yard field goal to extend its lead to 10-3.
Murphy and the Owls answered, tying the game with a touchdown of their own. The drive was highlighted by a huge fourth-down conversion from
Michael Benefield, who exploded up the middle for a nine-yard gain that put the ball on the CSU three-yard line.
A rushing touchdown from Murphy on the next play moved the score to 10-10. This marked the signal-caller's third rushing score of the season and 23rd of his career.
The Kennesaw State defense forced a punt to give the offense a chance to take its first lead of the game.
KSU drove down the field on seven plays, but a missed field goal kept the score even, 10-10.
With six seconds left in the fourth quarter, Bucs kicker Sam Babbash blasted a 48-yard field goal that gave Charleson Southern a 13-10 victory. The game marked CSU's first win against KSU since 2016.
Kennesaw State football is back in action next Saturday, Oct. 7 as the team welcomes Tennessee State to Fifth Third Bank Stadium for the program's annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be the first matchup in series history.
