Owls Unable to Overcome Sharp FGCU Attack

9/28/2023 9:51:00 PM

FT. MYERS, Fl. – The Owls couldn't overcome FGCU's quick strike attack falling 3-1 Thursday night in Ft. Myers, Fl.

"Despite the result, I'm pleased with how this team played. I think we deserved a better result but give credit to FGCU," coach Benji Walton said. "If we can play with that kind of energy, we are on the cusp of something great. We must take care of controllables on defense because we allowed some goals and that's on us."

Although the score wasn't even, many of the stats were. The Owls (1-7-4) not only had the shots advantage (15) but also shots on goal with seven compared to the (7-4-1) Eagles six on goal. They also were in a dead heat for corner kicks with both teams accruing eight.

Aly Bryan got the attack going early with a shot on goal after an impressive volley in the first two minutes.

Allanah Blye made an astonishing diving save to her right with 28 minutes left in the first half. Shortly afterward, FGCU's Kendal Gargiula scored the first goal of the game with a pooch kick right over the defense.

At the 31-minute mark, Ashley Labbe put the Eagles up two with a header off the out-swinging corner kick.

Two minutes later, Kendall Hoskins scored her first career goal off the bounce from the Mai Jensen cross. With a defender draped on her hip, she floated it over the keeper's head bouncing into the right side of the goal cutting the lead to one.

The Eagles added on another goal at the half 49:30 mark from Katharina Oelschlaeger to go back up by two goals.

The Owls applied pressure to FGCU in the second half earning back-to-back corners with 35 minutes left. They both ended in headers that nearly found the net but were deflected away from the defense.
