KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State offense (Gold) soared to a 47-32 victory over the defense (Black) in the program's annual Spring Game on Friday night inside Fifth Third Bank Stadium. With the win, the offense will enjoy steak and ribs for dinner while the defense will have to settle for hot dogs, baked beans, and water as the consolation prize.
"It was a positive game tonight," said head coach
Brian Bohannon. "Our kids have picked up on stuff really well and have had a good plan on both sides of the new install. It's been a great spring and overall was very encouraging."
The defense posted five three-and-outs on the night and were led by App State transfer,
Jamar Rucks. Defensive back
Markeith Montgomery also shined in the secondary and added a big pass break-up on the first drive of the game.
The offense scored its first touchdown on a 33-yard touchdown run from quarterback
Tyler Nelson. The rising freshman exploded down the right side of the field to give the Gold team its first lead of the night.
Later in the quarter,
Yesiah Clemons added to the Gold team's lead with a 15-yard touchdown run. Clemons, who arrived at Kennesaw State as a walk-on, was awarded a scholarship following the conclusion of tonight's event.
The offense struck twice in the second quarter when
Carson Kent caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from
Davis Bryson. The Gold team padded its lead when
Conor Cummins notched a 25-yard field goal right before the half.
The defense trailed 33-24 at the half and held the offense to only one score in the final two frames. With the ball on the one, Bryson punched the ball into the endzone for the Gold team's fourth touchdown of the night.
With the modified scoring method, the offense gained three points in the fourth quarter due to third down conversations (one point each). This moved the score to 47-32, which held as the final.
