KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State baseball earned its first ASUN Conference win of the year with a 10-7 victory over Eastern Kentucky in the series opener. With the win, the Owls improve to 9-11 (1-3 ASUN) while the Colonels fall to 8-13 (1-3 ASUN).
Spencer Hanson paced the Owls at the plate with two home runs and a career-high, six RBI. The KSU designated hitter launched a grand slam in the third inning and ended the night 3-for-4. He was the first Owl with six RBI in a game since
Malik Spratling versus Liberty in May of 2021.
Blake Wehunt (3-1) made his sixth start and tossed a career-high, seven innings. The 6'7 right-hander struck out nine batters to tie his personal record in the win. Wehunt allowed three runs on six hits and issued only one walk.
The Kennesaw State offense collected 13 hits and had four batters put together multi-hit performances. Also, 7-of-9 starters recorded at least one base knock in the series opener.
Brayden Eidson had a career-high four hits and finished 4-for-5 with a home run and double. For the second straight game, the KSU utility player was only a triple shy of the cycle. He also added three runs scored and two RBI in the contest.
Nick Colina also added a multi-hit night with a 2-for-4 performance. This was the left fielder's fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Jackson Chirello finished 1-for-4 with a double at the plate. The freshman infielder has now slashed a two-bagger in five of his last eight games and has posted 10 on the season, which is tops in the ASUN Conference.
Eidson kicked off the game with a single during his first career at-bat in the leadoff spot. Chirs Cole followed with a base-hit bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error from the EKU catcher.
Donovan Cash hit into a fielder's choice that scored Eidson, then Hanson slashed a two-out single that brought home Cash to give KSU a 2-0 lead.
The Owls padded their lead in the second with five runs on three hits. With the bases loaded, Hanson blasted a grand slam to centerfield to put KSU ahead, 7-0. The blast was the third of the year for the KSU designated hitter.
Kennesaw State struck again with two outs in the third.
Hudson Mimbs singled to left and scored when Eidson launched a no-doubter over the right-field wall. This marked Eidson's second straight game with a home run and moved KSU ahead 9-1.
Hanson homered again in the sixth to add to the KSU lead. This marked the first career multi-homer game for the Owls' designated hitter and increased the advantage to 10-3.
EKU scored four times in the ninth to pull the score to 10-7, which held as the final.
Kennesaw State baseball is back in action tomorrow for game two of its series with Eastern Kentucky. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. inside Stillwell Stadium.
