KENNESAW, Ga. –
Blake Wehunt shut down the Michigan offense and helped Kennesaw State baseball pull out a 4-3 win in the first game of the inaugural Mike Sansing Classic on Friday night at Stillwell Stadium. With the victory, the Owls (6-6) improve to 1-0 in the all-time series against the Wolverines (5-9).
Wehunt (2-1) tossed a season-high, 6.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits. The 6'7 right-hander struck out a career-high nine batters, and surrendered only one extra-base hit in the contest.
Blake Aita and
Smith Pinson combined to throw the final 2.2 innings out of the KSU bullpen. Pinson collected his first save of the season and fourth of his career. The duo allowed zero runs and only one hit on the night.
The Kennesaw State offense collected eight hits with two going for extra bases in the contest. The team was led by
Jackson Chirello who was the lone Owl in the multi-hit category. The freshman finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
Brayden Eidson collected a base knock in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games dating back to last season. The junior ended the night 1-for-4.
Chris Cole blasted his first triple in a KSU uniform during the second inning. The centerfielder 1-for-2 with a walk and run scored.
Corbin collected one base knock and drove in a run in the KSU victory. The Owls' leadoff batter put together a 1-for-3 performance with a hit by pitch.
Kennesaw State got on the board in the second with three, two-out runs.
Hudson Mimbs worked a walk and advanced to third on a double from Chirello. A wild pitch and an error from the Michigan catcher brought both runners in to give the Owls a 2-0 advantage.
Cole tripled over the centerfielder's head and came around to score on a base knock from Corbin. This gave KSU a 3-0 lead heading into the third inning.
Nick Colina led off the fourth with his team-leading fifth hit by pitch of the year.
Nick Hassan followed by slashing a single to right that was misplayed by the Wolverine's right fielder. A speedy Colina flew around the bases and dove headfirst into home to put Kennesaw State up 4-0.
Michigan scored three runs in the seventh, but the KSU bullpen dominated over the final 2.2 innings to hold the score at 4-3 and give Kennesaw State the victory.
KSU baseball is back in action tomorrow as the team battles UAB in the second game of the Mike Sansing Classic. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. and will be the 22nd matchup between the two programs with Kennesaw State holding a 12-9 advantage. Tickets are available for purchase by clicking
