KENNESAW, Ga. – Defender
Aila Swinton's second half header separated the Owls from the Dolphin's in a 1-0 victory Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
"I loved the way we came out and I thought we had a chance to score two goals early in the game," coach
Benji Walton said. "I was thrilled with the energy and proud of how the team attacked to get that goal."
Kennesaw State jumps to 3-7-4 earning consecutive shutout wins over ASUN opponents while Jacksonville drops to 2-9-3 and still searching of their first conference win.
The first threat of the day came in the first 10 minutes with
Macie Rainwater firing one off the right post that was then tossed away by the defense.
Kennesaw State had strong opportunities in the first 25 minutes including a header from
Camryn Simmons that nearly touched the left post.
Overall, KSU dominated the first half with a 7-1 shot advantage with three being on goal. They held JU to zero shots on goal in the first half. The corners also fell to KSU with a 5-1 advantage in the first 45 minutes.
At the 47-minute mark, Swinton netted the game winning goal off a rainbow corner kick from
Madelyn Baucom to take the one goal lead.
The goal marked Swinton's second of her career and Baucom's second assist of the season. Baucom has assisted in both the home wins for the Owls (Presbyterian and Jacksonville).
Swinton nearly added a second goal on a fireball from her right foot but was brought in by the keeper with just under 30 minutes left.
Defender
Jade Barkett intercepted a healthy attack from the Dolphins with 20 minutes left to take away the strongest chance for Jacksonville in the second half.
The Owls suffocated the Dolphin attack all night long, only allowing two shots on goal through the 90 minutes while putting up six on goal of their own.
The win marked the first back-to-back win of the season for the Owls and the fourth home shutout.
