KENNESAW, Ga. – A blistering attack from Kennesaw State netted a 3-1 result over the Queens Royals in Charlotte, N.C. Saturday afternoon.
"We had to get three points and we knew it," coach
Benji Walton said. "I'm happy with how we responded after some close opportunities early. Queens is a tough place to play with the turf if you're not used to it."
The win ushered the Owls into the top eight of the Atlantic Sun Championship but will still await the rest of the field to determine seeding.
Within the first five minutes, the Owls manufactured a solid opportunity as
Mai Jensen broke down her defender on the left flank and found
Aila Swinton. She then tried to pass to a streaking
Aly Bryan but it was deflected away ending the chance.
Shortly afterward, Bryan fought for a ball in the box shot but the shot attempt fell short with 22 minutes left in the first half.
With less than five minutes left in the first,
Macie Rainwater ended the scoreless tie by sneaking one past the keeper after the ball was deflected around off the cross from
Kendall Hoskins. It marked Rainwater's first score of the season.
"I have challenged Macie as she has missed a few opportunities this year, but it was great to see her succeed today," Walton said.
A few minutes into the second half, keeper
Charlee Bernal made a diving stop at the top of the box to negate the breakaway attack from the Royals. It saved what would've likely been a goal for Queens.
At the 50-minute mark,
Aila Swinton scored the second goal of the game for the Owls via a header to the left side of the goal. She received the ball from a rainbow cross off the foot of
Tianna Rivera going from left-to-right.
It marked the first time of the season the Owls have scored two goals in a game.
10 minutes left in the game; Queens scored off a penalty kick from Lucie Platt to trim it down to a one goal lead for KSU.
In the final five minutes,
Agata Giani bumped the lead back up to two after sputtering the ball past the keeper through the middle of the box roughly five feet out.
The Owls sported a heavy advantage in the shot on goal tally with a nine to five edge. They also finished on top in corners with four more than Queens.
The win signified the team's highest scoring total and the largest margin of victory of the season.
