Leading Off
 
A rematch of the 2021 ASUN Conference championship game is due up for the Kennesaw State softball team this weekend with a three-game set against the Liberty Flames.
 
The two squads play a doubleheader Saturday, April 9 with first pitch of game one set for 2:00 p.m. Game three on Sunday, April 10 is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
 
The Black and Gold last met the Flames in the ASUN Conference tournament championship game last May, where Liberty edged out a 5-4 victory over the Owls. KSU went on to win its first NCAA Division I tournament game one week later.
 
KSU enters the tilt coming off a series win over ASUN foe Lipscomb last weekend. Melanie Bennett pitched 7.0 innings of three-hit ball in a 7-0 win Sunday.
 
The Owls scheduled game against Mercer this past Wednesday was canceled due to inclement weather in the forecast.
 
Gameday Storylines
>> Taylor Cates leads the team in home runs (11), doubles (9), runs (22), hits (38), batting average (.400), OPS % (1.281), RBI (26), total bases (80), on-base percentage (.439), stolen bases (7) and slugging percentage (.842).
>> Cates also holds the ASUN lead in home runs and slugging percentage.
>> Faith Alexander has 27 hits and 15 RBI in 23 games played this season. She is second on the team in batting average (.333).
>> Pitcher Melanie Bennett has accounted for more than half of KSU's innings pitched this season (102.0 of 198.0) and strikeouts (99 of 158).
>> Freshmen Ty Hardeman is second on the team with 17 runs scored.

A Familiar Foe
Liberty leads the all-time series against the Owls, 12-6 and has taken each of the last six games.
The two last met in the 2021 ASUN Conference championship game on May 15, 2021 where the Flames won 5-4.
KSU is seeking its first win over Liberty since April 2, 2021 in a 5-4 victory in Virginia.

ASUN Rising
The Owls enter 2022 after reaching the ASUN tournament championship game a season ago. KSU was picked to finish second in the conference by coaches from the conference. Taylor Cates, Brinaya Bailey and Melanie Bennett were named to the preseason ASUN All-Conference team.

2021 Rewind
Head coach Tripp MacKay leads the squad after closing out the 2021 campaign in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, where the program earned its first victory in a Division I NCAA tournament game, defeating the Auburn Tigers 1-0. The Owls also dominated in the ASUN tournament, making it all the way to the ASUN championship game against the Liberty Flames.

On Deck
The road trip continues for the Owls on Friday, April 15 and Saturday, April 16 for three games against the North Florida Ospreys. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+ and first pitch of game one on Friday is set for 4:00 p.m.
KSU returns to Bailey Park on Saturday, April 23 for the first two games of a three-game series against Florida Gulf Coast. Fans are encouraged to wear gold and 'Gold Out Gulf Coast' during Saturday's doubleheader.
Admission is free to all 2022 home Kennesaw State softball games.
