SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A seven-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in tonight's game as Kennesaw State baseball fell to Wofford, 8-6. The Owls (8-4) registered 11 hits in the contest and threw a season-high eight pitchers.
Smith Pinson registered his second start on the year and held the Wofford (7-7) offense scoreless. The freshman tossed three innings and allowed only one hit. The right-hander retired nine of 11 batters faced and recorded one strikeout.
Wofford scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to take an early 1-0 lead. The Kennesaw State offense answered and tallied six runs on four hits in the top half of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Nick Colina ripped a three-RBI double off the centerfield wall to break the game open for the Owls.
The KSU offense was paced by three players who recorded multiple hits.
Tyler Simon led the way and recorded a 3-for-4 performance. The shortstop has posted back-to-back multi-hit games and has reached base in five consecutive contests.
Centerfielder
Josh Hatcher extended his hit streak to seven, as the senior was 2-for-4 with a double in tonight's game. Hatcher drove in one run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and then came around to score in the Owls' six-run fifth inning.
Cash Young tallied a 2-for-5 day at the plate, with one run scored and one RBI. The third baseman has posted multi-hits in four of his last seven games and has reached base safely in ten straight.
Wofford scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 advantage. Neither team scored throughout the final three frames.
The Black and Gold are back in action this Friday, as the team travels to UNC-Wilmington for a three-game weekend set. The series between the Owls and Seahawks will be the second meeting in history for the two programs, with UNCW holding a 2-1 advantage. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon inside Brooks Field.
