BOX SCORE
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Kennesaw State baseball team opened up its series with UNCW on Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Brooks Field.
The visitors found themselves in trouble in the opening innings, but were consistently able to get themselves out of troublesome situations.
Starting pitcher Jack Myers would end the first inning with an important strikeout, as the potential first run of the game for UNCW sat at third base.
The Seahawks had runners at the corners the next inning, but Myers, catcher Nick Hassan and shortstop Tyler Simon teamed up for the strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to retire the side. The play was one of three double plays turned by Kennesaw State on Friday.
Owls filled the bases in the top of the fourth inning, as the visitors opened up the scoring through Donovan Cash; the designated hitter chopped a double down the right-field line to score Nick Colina and Zac Corbin.
First baseman Brayden Eidson would make it a three-run frame for Kennesaw State, sending Simon home on a fielder's choice.
Myers pitched brilliantly through four innings, keeping the hosts off the scoreboard with three strikeouts while allowing two hits.
After a base hit in the bottom of the fifth scratched one back for the Seahawks, UNCW tied the game in the sixth with a two-run shot to right field.
Josh Hatcher's good day got better, as he sent a base knock to left field in the top of the eighth inning to score pinch runner Joseph Gossett. The center fielder ended his day three-for-five at the plate, his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Jared Rine was impressive after coming to the mound in the seventh inning, throwing three innings of scoreless ball. The junior held the Seahawks to one hit while striking out two batters; the appearance marked Rine's first win of the season.
