Sales Grand Slam Lifts KSU Past Roos

Game One Box Score (PDF) | Game Two Box Score (PDF)

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The resiliency of the Kennesaw State softball team (5-11) combined with a stellar performance by Cheyanne Sales led the Owls to a 10-8 victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos (4-13) in game one of a doubleheader Saturday.

The Owls fell to No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks (14-4) 9-1 in game two of the doubleheader.

Brinaya Baley, Katie Greep and Isabella Galloway all recorded hits in both games.

GAME ONE (vs. Kansas City – W, 10-8)
KSU started Saturday with first-inning RBI singles from Galloway, Cheyanne Sales and Madison Miller, putting the Owls up 3-0.
UMKC responded in its half of the first, taking a 4-3 lead. The Roos hit two homers in the bottom of the second, extending the Owls' deficit to 7-3.
A two-run home run from Bailey and an RBI single from Ty Hardeman in the top of the fifth cut the UMKC lead to 7-5. A solo shot from the Roos pushed the lead back out to three the next half inning.
Down three in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, Sales hit grand slam to left center to score Greep, Faith Alexander and Taylor Cates.
Melanie Bennett (3-6) pitched 6.0 innings of relief and was credited with the victory.

NOTES
>> Sales tallied a single-game career-high five RBI, tied for the most by an Owl this season (Cates vs. Georgia State on Feb. 25).
>> Alexander and Sales pushed their hitting streaks to three games against UMKC.
>> Sales' grand slam was the first by an Owl since Cates on May 13, 2021 against Florida Gulf Coast.
>> Cates extended her hitting streak to a team-best five games against UMKC.
>> The game marked Greep's fifth three-hit game of her KSU career.
>> The Owls are undefeated in 2022 when scoring 10 or more runs (2-0).

GAME TWO (at Arkansas – L, 9-1)
The Owls got off to a slow start against the reigning SEC regular season co-champions after Arkansas pitching retired the first 10 batters without allowing a hit. The Razorbacks scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.
Greep broke through for the offense with a single in the fourth inning. The Razorbacks scored again in the home half of the fourth and pushed the lead to 5-0.
KSU got on the board in the top of the fifth after a solo home run from Bailey, her second of the season and third of her career.
Arkansas scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to win via run rule, 9-1.
Lindsey Kyte (0-1) was credited with the loss, her first of the season.

NOTES
>> Greep extended her hitting streak to three games.
>> Bailey has a homer in back-to-back games and has hit safely in three straight games.
>> Galloway had three hits across the two games Saturday.
