FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kennesaw State softball team (6-12) ended the Razorback Rumble with a 7-1 rout of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Roos (4-14) Sunday.
Both offenses were stymied through the first two scoreless innings with only five hits between them.
After keeping the Roos scoreless in the top of the third, the Owl bats took flight in the bottom of the inning.
Leadoff singles by
Ty Hardeman and
Madison Miller got the offense going and then
Faith Alexander reached on a fielder's choice to score Hardeman and put KSU ahead 1-0.
Katie Greep followed that by advancing on a defensive error by the Roos to score Miller and get push the Owls ahead 2-0.
A single from
Brinaya Bailey and another UMKC error plated two more runs for the Black and Gold and extended the lead to 4-0. That lead increased to 6-0 after Hardeman hit a two-RBI double in her second at-bat of the inning.
UMKC finally posted a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Owl lead to 6-1.
Alexander's second hit of the game once again scored Hardeman to drive the score up to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth. The Owl defense held the Roo offense scoreless in the remaining innings.
Melanie Bennett (4-6) was credited with the win after pitching 7.0 innings with only one earned run and seven strikeouts. She is 2-0 against UMKC this season.
NOTES
>> Hardeman set a career high with three base hits against the Roos.
>> Alexander has hit safely in eight of her 10 games this season and has 12 hits in that span.
>> Bailey and Greep increased their hitting streaks to four games. Bailey has at least one RBI in the last three games.
>> Miller has at least one hit in five of her last seven games.
>> The Owls are undefeated this season when scoring seven or more runs (6-0).

KSU heads to Huntsville, Tex. on Wednesday, March 9 for a midweek doubleheader against the Sam Houston Bearkats. First pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m. EST.
The Owls return to Bailey Park on Wednesday, March 16 for a showdown against the Auburn Tigers set for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. Admission is free and fans can follow the action on ESPN+.
