KENNESAW, Ga. – With the bases loaded in the 11th inning,
Tyler Simon laced a walk-off single to right field to give Kennesaw State a 5-4 win over USC Upstate on Tuesday night inside Stillwell Stadium. With the victory, the Owls (17-7) improve their win streak to five and have won nine of the last 10 against the Spartans (16-9).
Spencer Hanson led off the bottom of the 11th with a pinch-hit single. A hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases for the KSU offense with two outs in the frame. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Simon ripped a single down the right field line to bring home the winning run and close the book on the night.
Simon finished the game 2-for-6 and extended his hit streak to seven games. The shortstop posted his eighth multi-hit game on the year.
The KSU offense compiled 11 hits on the night with seven-of-nine starters registering at least one hit. Three Owls put together multi-hit performances.
Hudson Mimbs led the way with a 2-for-3 night. The freshman belted his second home run of the season to give KSU its first lead in the fifth inning. Mimbs has now posted three consecutive two-hit games.
Zac Corbin launched his second home run in back-to-back games with a deep fly that gave KSU the lead in the eighth. Corbin has scored at least one run for the Owls' offense in each of the last five contests.
Josh Hatcher waited until the ninth inning to extend his hit streak to 19. With two outs and KSU trailing by one in the ninth, the reigning National Player of the Week slashed a single up the middle to tie the ballgame. Hatcher finished 1-for-5 with a walk.
Brayden Eidson added a 2-for-5 night with a run scored. The outfielder has reached base safely in three straight.
The KSU pitching staff threw seven different pitchers and held the Spartans to only three earned runs.
Makenzie Stills led the way with another solid performance. Stills pitched a season-high four innings and allowed only two hits. The right-hander allowed one earned run and struck out four.
Ford Townsend and
Luke Torbert each tossed scoreless innings in relief. The right-handers surrendered only two hits and did not allow a run to score.
Kennesaw State is back in action this Friday, Apr. 1 as it travels to Florida Gulf Coast for an ASUN Conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. inside Swanson Stadium in Ft. Myers, Fla.
