KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State offense compiled 13 unanswered runs to defeat UNF 13-9 on Sunday afternoon inside Stillwell Stadium. With the win, the Owls (16-7, 6-0 ASUN Conference) recorded their second consecutive ASUN sweep and have won their first six conference games for the first time in the program's Division I history.
"I am proud of the way our guys battled," said head coach
Ryan Coe. "We stayed with our approach and kept chipping at the lead. There was never a doubt in our dugout that we couldn't come back."
KSU erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to take its first lead of the day.
Spencer Hanson laid down a beautiful bunt on the third base line to bring in
Nick Hassan and tie the game.
With two outs in the frame,
Josh Hatcher legged out an infield single that scored two due to an error by the UNF shortstop.
Later in the inning,
Zac Corbin sent a grand slam deep over the wall in right to break the game open and extend the lead to 13-9. The seven-run deficit is KSU's largest comeback of the season.
On the mound,
Brayden Eidson was untouchable. The southpaw entered in relief during the top of the first and tossed a career-high 7.1 innings. Eidson allowed only one earned run on two hits while striking out four.
"Eidson's performance today was incredible," said Coe. "For him to get us through almost eight innings while giving us a chance to come back, I am extremely proud of him. He attacked hitters and kept us in the ballgame, it was an awesome performance."
The KSU offense put together another impressive day. The team collected 15 hits and scored at least six runs in a single inning for the fourth consecutive game. Eight-of-nine starters recorded a base knock while six batters posted multi-hit days.
Donovan Cash paced the Owls out of the cleanup spot. The first baseman went 3-for-4 with a double and posted his fourth consecutive game with multiple hits.
Corbin could not have picked a better time to record the first long ball of his collegiate career. The outfielder contributed a 1-for-4 afternoon with two runs scored and four RBI.
Hatcher extended his hit streak to 18 games with a 2-for-5 day. The centerfielder scored one run and drove in one on the afternoon. Hatcher has reached base safely in 22 straight.
Cash Young added another impressive day at the plate. The senior went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. The third baseman registered the 92nd RBI of his collegiate career in the win.
Nick Colina continued to pace the bottom of the order. The junior added a 2-for-4 performance with one home run out of the nine-hole. Colina finished the series with four hits in seven at-bats.
Hanson and
Hudson Mimbs each added two hits in the contest. Hanson finished 2-for-5 with two RBI while Mimbs followed with a 2-for-4 day.
The Ospreys (9-16, 1-5) scored seven runs in the first two innings to take a big lead. KSU answered back in the bottom of the second with four runs of its own. The Owls mashed five hits that brought four runners across the plate.
Young ripped a double to center that brought in the first two runs of the game. On the next pitch, Hanson slashed a ground ball through the left-side to bring in Hassan. Later in the inning,
Tyler Simon singled to center to bring in the fourth KSU run of the frame.
The Owls added another run in the fourth when Colina collected belted a 393-ft. home run to right. This marked the second of the year for the KSU outfielder and cut the lead to 7-5.
In the fifth, Corbin walked to start the frame. Cash moved him into scoring position when he registered his seventh double of the year. Corbin came around to score on a fielder's choice and trimmed the Ospreys' lead to one.
On the weekend, KSU finished with 47 hits and scored 40 runs. The team combined for 14 extra base hits, including nine doubles.
"I talked to the team before the game about finishing the series strong," said Coe. "I know we didn't get off to a great start, but the way we battled back and secured the sweep shows what this team is made of."
