CONWAY, Ark. – The 2022 ASUN Conference schedule continued for the Kennesaw State softball team (10-16, 2-3 ASUN) Saturday as the Owls fell in both games of a doubleheader against the Central Arkansas Bears (18-11, 3-2 ASUN).
Infielder
Taylor Cates accounted for every RBI for the Black and Gold during the two contests. Her season RBI total now stands at a team-high 24.
Game One (L, 9-1)
After both teams failed to plate runs in the two opening frames, Cates scored
Madison Miller in the top of the third to put KSU up 1-0.
Central Arkansas kept the Owls' offense at bay for the remainder of the first game.
The Bears' offense scored nine runs over the next three innings, including four in the bottom of the fifth to take the victory via run-rule, 9-1.
KSU starting pitcher
Melanie Bennett (7-8) pitched 3.0 innings and was credited with the loss.
GAME NOTES
>> Game one marked the first time Cates has tallied an RBI without getting a hit since April 2, 2021 against Liberty.
>> Outfielder
Katie Greep recorded her third multi-hit game of the 2022 season.
>> Freshman
Madison Miller improved her hitting streak to three, tying her career-high.
Game Two (L, 8-2)
Opposite of the opening game, the Bears scored first, putting a 1-0 lead together in the opening inning.
KSU responded two innings later with Cates hitting a two-run homer to left center, scoring Greep and giving the Owls a 2-1 lead.
Central Arkansas evened the score in the bottom of the fourth at 2-2 and followed that with six more runs in the next two innings, moving the deficit to the eventual final score of 8-2.
Lindsey Kyte (0-3) pitched 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and was credited with the loss.
GAME NOTES
>> Cates improved her team-high and ASUN-high home run total to 11. She posted 17 during 2021.
>> Faith Alexander has hit safely in 11 of her last 13 games and has 12 RBI during that span.
ON DECK
The Owls conclude the series in Conway on Sunday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m. EST.
KSU returns to Bailey Park on Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader against ASUN foe Lipscomb for 'Youth Softball Day.' First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
