MACON, Ga. – More late-game drama from the Kennesaw State softball team (10-14, 2-1 ASUN Conference) edged the Black and Gold past the Mercer Bears (7-21, 0-0 SoCon) 7-6 Wednesday.
Down a run in the top of the seventh with one out and a runner on, pinch hitter
Pacy Villa crushed the go-ahead homer over the center field fence to score
Madison Miller and give KSU a one-run advantage.
The Bears got the scoring started in the bottom of the first off of a bases-loaded walk to get out to a 1-0 lead.
Faith Alexander put the Owls on the scoreboard the next half inning, scoring
Brinaya Bailey and
Kiera Cooper who reached on back-to-back singles to start the second.
Mercer retook the lead after a five-run bottom of the third.
Cheyanne Sales cut into the deficit with a solo homer in the top of the fifth, putting the score at 6-3 in favor of the Bears.
A sacrifice fly from Alexander in the sixth added another run for KSU.
Katie Greep followed the sac fly with a single into left that scored
Ty Hardeman. The two-run sixth cut the deficit to 6-5.
Villa's seventh-inning homer gave the Owls a 7-6 lead.
The Owl defense held off the Bear bats in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory.
Emily Perrin (2-3) pitched 3.2 innings of relief and was credited with the win. Perrin got the team out of a jam with two runners in scoring position to record the game-sealing out.
GAME NOTES
>> Villa's seventh-inning homer was the first of her KSU career.
>> Taylor Cates stole second base and third base in the third inning to bring her season total to a team-leading six stolen bases.
>> Sales' homer in the fifth was her sixth of the season, extending her single-season career-high.
>> The Owls had four stolen bases against Mercer, the most in a single game this season.
>> KSU remains undefeated (10-0) this season when scoring five or more runs.
ON DECK
The Owls continue the ASUN schedule on Saturday, March 26 and Sunday, March 27 for a three-game series against the Central Arkansas Bears.
KSU returns to Bailey Park on Saturday, April 2 for a doubleheader against ASUN foe Lipscomb for 'Youth Softball Day.' First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
