Villa’s Homer Lifts KSU Past Bears

Box Score (PDF)

MACON, Ga. – More late-game drama from the Kennesaw State softball team (10-14, 2-1 ASUN Conference) edged the Black and Gold past the Mercer Bears (7-21, 0-0 SoCon) 7-6 Wednesday.

Down a run in the top of the seventh with one out and a runner on, pinch hitter Pacy Villa crushed the go-ahead homer over the center field fence to score Madison Miller and give KSU a one-run advantage.

The Bears got the scoring started in the bottom of the first off of a bases-loaded walk to get out to a 1-0 lead.

Faith Alexander put the Owls on the scoreboard the next half inning, scoring Brinaya Bailey and Kiera Cooper who reached on back-to-back singles to start the second.

Mercer retook the lead after a five-run bottom of the third.

Cheyanne Sales cut into the deficit with a solo homer in the top of the fifth, putting the score at 6-3 in favor of the Bears.

A sacrifice fly from Alexander in the sixth added another run for KSU. Katie Greep followed the sac fly with a single into left that scored Ty Hardeman. The two-run sixth cut the deficit to 6-5.

Villa's seventh-inning homer gave the Owls a 7-6 lead.

The Owl defense held off the Bear bats in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory.

Emily Perrin (2-3) pitched 3.2 innings of relief and was credited with the win. Perrin got the team out of a jam with two runners in scoring position to record the game-sealing out.
