The Owls return three athletes who received 2021 end-of-season awards from the Big South Conference. Xavier Shepherd, the Offensive Player of the Year, Nathan Robertson, the Special Teams Player of the Year and Garland Benyard, the Defensive Freshman of the Year, are all returning for the 2022 season.
The team returns eight of 11 starters from the Big South's top defense. Specifically, the KSU defensive line returns all four starters, including 2021 second team All-Big South selection, Travis Bell.
Kennesaw State's nationally-ranked rushing attack returns eight players who recorded a start in 2021. The offense finished the season ranked second in the nation in rushing yards per game and returns STATS Perform first team All-American Shepherd at quarterback. The offense has rushed for 150+ yards in 72 straight games dating back to week 11 of the 2015 season.
After taking over in week two at Georgia Tech, Shepherd went on to win 10 of his next 11 starts. The quarterback broke the KSU single-season record for passing touchdowns with 15 and led the FCS in rushing touchdowns with 23. Shepherd also broke five single-game Big South postseason records in the first-round win versus Davidson.
The Owls were ranked in the top 25 of all 14 polls released last season by STATS Perform and the AFCA. The team has been ranked in one of the two polls for 58 consecutive weeks, dating back to week nine of 2017. Since its inception as a program, 100 national polls have been released with the Owls appearing in over 67 percent of the rankings. Of those 100 polls, KSU has been inside the top-10 46 percent of the time.
