THE STORYLINE
The Owls put in their best offensive performance of the conference campaign in a 72-65 win on Saturday afternoon against Bellarmine, thanks to double-digit point tallies from three different KSU players. Freshman Prencis Harden put in her most dynamic performance yet, logging career highs with 11 points and seven rebounds in just 18 minutes of work.
COACH OCTAVIA BLUE QUOTES
On the team's play…
"I talked to my squad about sharing the ball and not always making the home run play. Being equally happy in doing the work and having someone else cash out, so to speak. Sharing the ball and running through our sets cleanly was a big emphasis for this game."
On the play of Prencis Harden…
"She came into practice the last three days and was very good. She didn't try to force anything and played to her strengths. She started it on the defensive end because she brings a lot of intensity in our presses, but then she started to rebound the ball and score. When you do all of the little things, everything else comes around. Very happy with her effort in terms of her performance today."
On the team's rebounding success against the Knights…
"We had 15 offensive rebounds and that's just extra possessions. We went to the glass hard and outrebounded their team by 11 and any time you do that to a team and are able to capitalize, it puts you in a good spot to win."
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was Alexis Poole who got her team started, putting the Owls up 2-0 early with a shot off the glass and in.
The Knights answered back with a ton of energy, taking an 8-4 lead before a driving layup from Amani Johnson retook an advantage for KSU.Â
Leading 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, Gillian Piccolino made it an 18-10 scoreline a minute into the second with the black and gold's first 3-pointer of the afternoon.Â
Poole and Amani Johnson were electric in the first half, combining for 22 of the team's 34 points in the first half.
A back-and-forth second quarter saw Kennesaw State narrowly outscore Bellarmine 21-19 in the final 10 minutes of the half, and the Owls took a 34-29 advantage into the locker room.
Excitement built up in Freedom Hall, as the two squads combined for a series of four-straight 3-pointers in a span of 1:09; Piccolino and Jah'Che Whitfield netted for KSU.
Harden came on late in the third quarter and got to work, opening up her account with a successful three-point play off of an and-one opportunity.
With her team up by seven at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the freshman was crucial in closing out the victory for the visitors. Harden swished four buckets for eight points in the final 10 minutes.
Dominating the glass and picking up quality points from the bench for a 72-65 win, the Owls left the court of Freedom Hall with their second road victory of the ASUN season.
