ATLANTA, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team came from behind to defeat Georgia State 4-3 on Saturday afternoon en route to its sixth consecutive victory. At 6-0, the Owls are off to their second-best start in program history. The team is one win shy of the program record set by the 2011 squad.
Â
KSU Director of Tennis Matt Emery on the Win
"We could not be happier for our women and how they are leading our program so far this season. This is another great program win, especially on the road against a tough in-state team. After losing the doubles point, Taylor (Dean) and Val (Taddia)Â putting us back on the board quickly was huge. Shout out to Sofía Pinedo and Ji (Youn Lee) for being unbelievably resilient at the end in helping us secure the win. This team has a lot of fun working hard, and it shows in moments like today."
Â
How it Happened
For the first time this season, KSU did not win the doubles point. The Owls had recorded the doubles win for five consecutive matches prior to today.
Â
After falling behind 1-0, the Owls needed to win four of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
Taylor Dean dominated on court two and quickly earned a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Valentina Taddia followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win from court four.
Â
Sofia Pinedo fell behind on court six, but won sets two and three to tie the match 3-3 with one point remaining.
Ji Youn Lee was the last player left on the courts. The senior won the first set 6-3, but lost set two 6-7. With the match on the line, Lee pulled off a 5-4 victory in the third set to extend the Owls' winning streak to six.
Â
With the win, KSU has now defeated Georgia State in back-to-back contests for the first time in school history. The Owls are back in action next Saturday, Mar. 5 as they head to Birmingham to square-off with UAB. Start time will be announced at a later date.
