Owls Defeat Blazers, Tie Best Start in Program History

3/5/2022 5:53:00 PM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State women's tennis team won its seventh straight match as it defeated the UAB Blazers 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. At 7-0, KSU has tied the best start in program history set by the 2011 squad. Today's win also marked the first time in team history the Owls defeated the Blazers.

KSU Director of Tennis Matt Emery on the Win
"Super proud of the women today for taking out a tough UAB team on the road. Some days, this sport comes down to just being more resilient and being one ball tougher than your opponent. I thought we did a tremendous job of that today as a team, and we are excited to come back out and compete as hard as we can again tomorrow at home against a tough FAMU team."

How it Happened
The Owls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in doubles play. The team secured the point for the sixth time in seven attempts this season.  Valentina Taddia and Ji Youn Lee had a hard-fought match on court two and pulled out a 7-5 win. Sofia Pinedo and Sophia Unger followed suit and sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 victory.

Kennesaw State never looked back after it took the early lead. Both Lee and Unger dominated in two-set victories to move the score to 3-0. Kat Muzik came from behind on court one to secure a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win that sealed the match for the Owls. Taddia was also victorious in three-sets as the graduate pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

KSU is back in action tomorrow as it looks to make program history. The Owls host Florida A&M for the home opener at the Betty Siegel Tennis Courts on the KSU campus. With a win, Kennesaw State would break the program record for most consecutive wins to start a season. Match time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
