KENNESAW, Ga. – A walk-off single from
Cash Young propelled KSU to a 6-5 victory over the Fairfield Stags on Friday night. The Preseason All-ASUN selection roped an RBI single down the left field line to score
Joseph Gossett and give KSU its first 5-1 start since 2015.
The Owls (5-1) used a strong eighth inning to jump back into the game.
Hudson Mimbs led off with a single down the right field line to kickstart the offense. With runners on second and third,
Nick Hassan lined a single up the middle to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the ninth.
Offensively, Kennesaw State slashed 10 hits on the day. The team was led by Young who finished 2-for-5 with one run scored. The senior also recorded his team-leading 10
th RBI of the season.
Nick Colina and
Donovan Cash also added multi-hits in the contest. Both hitters finished 2-for-4.
Fairfield (2-2) came out swinging early in the game. The Stags slashed six hits in the first two innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. KSU starter
Jack Myers settled in and allowed only two hits through his final four innings of work. The righty finished with 6.0 inning pitched, four strikeouts and two earned runs.
Kennesaw State scratched back in the third when
Nick Colina led off with a double to left center. Cash then registered his first hit of the day to advance Colina to third. Mimbs pulled the score to 3-1 after a sacrifice fly helped the freshman record the first RBI of his KSU career.
The Stags led 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Josh Hatcher roped a double to left center for his team-leading fourth of the year. The senior then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly from
Zac Corbin.
Mackenzie Stills and
Nathan Holler finished the game for the KSU bullpen and allowed zero hits through the final three frames. Holler came on to hold the game in the ninth and struck out two-of-three batters faced. The scoreless inning earned the sophomore right-hander his second win in consecutive contests.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow, Feb. 26 for a doubleheader against Fairfield. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. inside Stillwell Stadium. The second game will begin approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one. Tickets are available for purchase by clicking
