THE STORYLINE
The three-headed monster of
Alexis Poole,
Bre'Lyn Snipes and
Amani Johnson combined for 43 of Kennesaw State's 53 points on Saturday afternoon, but a strong effort in the second and third quarters wasn't enough to cancel out the early deficit that Jacksonville set in the first quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacksonville came out steaming in the first quarter, putting together a near-perfect, 11-for-14 effort from the field in the opening 10 minutes.
Down 27-11 going into the second quarter, the Owl defense locked down and gave the offense a chance to scratch back into the game.
Snipes scored her sixth point of the quarter with a driving layup at the 5:42 mark, bringing Kennesaw State back within 10 points.
A Poole floater cut the KSU disadvantage to eight points at the end of the first half, while the defense held the Dolphins to just five points in the second quarter.
At the end of the next quarter, Poole carried out her role perfectly and danced through the post to put the layup in; Jacksonville now led only 42-38.
The Dolphins took care of the ball well down the stretch, drawing nine fouls from the visitors in the fourth quarter.
62-53 was the final score between the two teams, with the Owls' impressive effort to bounce back after the first quarter coming up just short.
