THE STORYLINE
Amani Johnson netted 15 points in the fourth quarter on her way to a season-high, 25-point performance, bringing the Owls to within seven points after being 22 down. The point guard also broke the Division I record for most career minutes by a KSU player, now sitting at 3,981 through her four years as an Owl. Stetson kept possession well in the last minute to secure a 75-64 win Thursday night in the Convocation Center.
COACH OCTAVIA BLUE QUOTES
On her main takeaways…
"We got outscored by five in the first quarter and then seven in the second quarter. I think sometimes we dig ourselves a hole and then fight hard toward the end of the game. It's all about coming out, establishing who we are and sustaining that level of play for the entire time. Nonetheless, I was really happy with our effort in the second half. I think late in the game, we showed our gritness, toughness, willingness to never give up, and execution of special situations."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Johnson played a role early in the matchup, tying the game 7-7 with a second-chance jumper at the 4:10 mark of the first quarter.
Stetson took a five-point advantage into the second quarter, which it converted into a 12-point advantage in the first 3:17 of the period.
The Owls would cut the deficit to 10 points with a
Prencis Harden driving layup with 3:35 left in the half.
Visiting from DeLand, Fla., the Hatters extended their lead to as much as 64-42 in the fourth quarter; however, Kennesaw State wasn't down and out just yet.
An 11-0 run from the hosts would bring the Owls back to within seven with a Johnson trifecta, a feat she would repeat 13 seconds later for her 25th point of the night.
With the KSU no. 0's 37th minute of the night, she broke Kristina Wells previous KSU record of 3,977 Division I minutes in a career.
Coach Blue and her squad were forced to foul to keep the clock from running, but Stetson continued to inbound and shoot free throws effectively.
KSU fell to the Hatters 75-64 on Equality and Inclusion Night, as the Owls have just one regular-season game before the ASUN postseason.
