THE STORYLINE
Valentine's Day turned out to be a heartbreaker, with the Owls losing 56-51 on Monday night in the Convocation Center after taking a 15-point lead late in the first half.
COACH OCTAVIA BLUE QUOTES
On the lack of offensive rebounds…
"It definitely played a factor. We didn't create second-chance opportunities, especially when we didn't shoot the ball particularly well in the third and fourth quarters. We failed to tally double digits in the second half, so definitely we need to get on the boards."
On playing Jacksonville again in five days…
"We've got to go look at the film. Honestly, I'm not concerned with them right now. We've got to go to Florida Gulf Coast and we'll take care of Jacksonville after that."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Everything was going right for Kennesaw State early on, with
Amani Johnson sinking a trifecta to take a 9-4 advantage with 6:22 left in the first quarter.
The trey played a role again later in the period, with
Bre'Lyn Snipes sniping from the perimeter to make it a 14-4 game.
Taking an 18-6 lead into the second quarter, the Owl defense began to lock down in a big way; the Jacksonville Dolphins were held to two-of-12 from field goals, needing their eight-of-13 performance from the free-throw line to garner the 12-point tally in the last ten minutes before halftime.
With a 15-point edge at halftime, the Owls were feeling good when they came back on the court for the third quarter.
The Owls were able to keep their distance for most of the third quarter, but the Dolphins showed that they were not about to give up and cut the scoreline to 44-36 in favor of Kennesaw State.
The fourth quarter would be all Jacksonville, outscoring the Owls 20-7 in the fourth quarter after keeping Kennesaw State to nine points in the third.
Reminiscent of the Dolphins' second quarter, Kennesaw State went two-of-12 in the final 10 minutes and two-of-six from free throws.
The Owls' three-game winning streak would stop in its tracks, with the Dolphins handing them a 56-51 loss at home.
