KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women's soccer team awed the Fifth Third Bank Stadium audience as the Owls opened up their ASUN account with an emphatic 3-0 victory over North Alabama. The win marks the 150th of head coach Benji Walton's career.
Midfielder Ebony Clarke captured the hearts of the KSU faithful with a brace comprising two sweet strikes; the Canadian international is the first Owl with a two-goal performance this season.
The Owls controlled the game for all 90 minutes, but it took over 35 minutes for the hosts to score.
Clarke received a loose ball from a throw-in 25 yards from goal. The midfielder shifted to her left until a window of opportunity appeared, firing a screamer with her left foot into the top-right corner of the North Alabama net. This marks the first goal of the Washington State transfer's collegiate career.
Kendall Higgs was a ball of energy all game, turning with the ball and creating space. The striker was rewarded with a selfless cross from Caeden Price on the right flank, which Higgs slid to put a left foot on. The goal is the first for the redshirt junior on the season, after tying for second among KSU goal scorers last season. Jenna Vollrath received a secondary assist after finding Price's run with a ball over the top.
Walton on Higgs…
"Higgs came out on a mission. She's been the most vocal about getting back to the final. She was disappointed last year that we couldn't get over that hump and she was on a mission tonight to lead by example. The players followed her lead tonight. She played outstandingly and aggressively."
Vollrath made her return to the starting 11 known with another fine assist, as she gifted Clarke a one-on-one chance. Clarke made no mistake, as she hammered down the nail in the coffin by dribbling past the Lions' goalkeeper for the easy slot home.
Walton on Clarke…
"Ebony's been battling a couple injuries, so it was great to get her back healthy and playing. She's a very calm and intelligent player. She showed her quality on the ball with both of those goals today. She's brought another level to our mix. She's established a great relationship with the players around, playing with Higgs, playing with Jenna [Vollrath] and I think they play off each other really well."
