CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Kennesaw State women's soccer team (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the season Thursday night against College of Charleston (0-2-1), defeating the Cougars 2-1 in an extra-time thriller at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex.

"Unbelievable fight from our team tonight," said Head Coach Benji Walton. "Our ladies just keep growing and growing. We had two seniors get their first career goals tonight. Just an all-around great team effort. Something we can for sure build from." 

What ended as an exciting contest didn't start as such, as neither team put a shot on goal in the first half. 

The Charleston, S.C. team managed its first shot on goal early in the second half, but the Owls' No. 0 Dylan Pixton was equal to it. 

Freshman forward Macie Rainwater put a charge into a ball toward the middle of the College of Charleston frame; however, it found the hands of the Cougar keeper. 

A back pass from a Charleston defender also found the hands of the goalkeeper, setting up an indirect set piece for Kennesaw State in the Cougars' box. Sydney Borgelt touched it into Kathryn Schreck's path, who blasted it in for her first goal for the Owls.

"She's a fifth-year senior; she redshirted her freshman year due to an ACL. She's sure grown up. We need leadership and she just brings a calming presence. She's someone you can count on and it's special to see her score her first career goal. She leads by example. She's mild-mannered, she's a quiet kid but she loves soccer and she's just growing into that role. I couldn't be more proud of her."

Mere minutes later, the College of Charleston found an equalizer through a spot kick. 

Just when it looked like the team had won its first game, overtime now beckoned for Walton and his squad. 

Pixton showed off her clutch gene in the first ten-minute overtime period, saving two shots in a span of 33 seconds. 

In the opening minutes of the second period of overtime, Italian international Agata Giani drove inline to put herself in a dangerous position on the flank. The sophomore fizzed a cross into the box, where senior Lexi Labonte managed to get a piece of it to put it on frame. After making her first start of the season, Labonte pounced on her own rebound for the golden goal. A night of many firsts, the overtime winner was also the senior's first goal in her collegiate career. 

The Owls return home with a win, but must quickly prepare to welcome the Samford Bulldogs to Fifth Third Bank Stadium Sunday at 6 p.m.
