Cates Grand Slam Highlights 8-1 Victory Over Eagles

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team advanced to the winner's bracket of the ASUN semifinals after an 8-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast Thursday night at Bailey Park.

The Eagles (28-18, 15-3) got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after a single down the right field line from Marissa Mesiemore scored Reedy Davenport.

The Owls (24-23, 10-5) made it interesting in the top of the third inning plating five runs off an RBI single to center field from Christen Florence scored Faith Alexander before Taylor Cates dug in and smashed a grand slam to make it 5-1.

KSU added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI double down the left field line from Brea Dickey to extend the Owls' lead to 6-1.

Pinch hitter Brinaya Bailey added to the KSU lead in the top of the fifth inning after a single up the middle scored Lexi Solorzano.

KSU continued its scoring streak in the top of the sixth inning as Solorzano hit a single to right field from to bring home Dickey and seal the deal in an 8-1 decision over the Eagles.

Melanie Bennett (18-10) secured the win after 5.0 innings of work giving up one run on five hits. Peyton Elzey stepped in for relief in the bottom of the sixth inning allowing no runs on one hit.

Mesiemore (16-7) suffered the loss after tossing 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits while striking out one.

Notable Stats
  • Junior Taylor Cates recorded her first career grand slam for a total of 14 home runs this season.
  • Faith Alexander, Raleigh Williams, Lexi Solorzano and Brea Dickey each logged a double.
  • The Owls recorded their 12th game of the year with double-digit hits.
  •  Dickey led the team going 3-for-5 at the plate today scoring two runs and collecting an RBI.
  • Andrea Summey recorded a season high three hits, going 3-for-4 at the plate today.
  • Cates tallied a season high four RBIs.
 
Next Up
KSU will take on No. 1 North seed Liberty on Friday (May 14) at 3 p.m. at Bailey Park.
