KENNESAW, Ga.- The Kennesaw State softball team secured a 5-2 victory over Georgia Tech at Bailey Park on Friday night in game one of the home-and home series.
After a quick three up three down, the Owls (22-19, 10-2) took a 1-0 lead after a solo shot from
Brea Dickey over the center field wall. KSU looked to extend their lead after a pair of singles from
Christen Florence and
Cheyanne Sales but the Yellow Jackets (14-25, 7-19) were able to close the door.
GT would load the bases in the top of the second inning, but the Owls defense would hold strong and leave three Jackets stranded.
KSU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the third inning after an RBI double from
Lexi Solorzano to score Florence and a two-run single from pinch hitter
Brinaya Bailey to score pinch runner
Andrea Summey and Solorzano.
The Yellow Jackets cut into the Owls lead 4-2 after a sacrifice fly from Caroline Davis and an RBI single from Mallorie Black.
Melanie Bennett (16-9) stepped in to pitch for
Peyton Elzey (2-7) and was able to close the inning out with a strikeout and leave two runners stranded.
The Owls responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Dickey and Florence. A wild pitch from Morgan Bruce would give the runners a free base and an RBI single to the shortstop from Solorzano would plate Dickey and seal the deal in an 5-2 decision over the Yellow Jackets.
Bennett secured the win after stepping in for relief Elzey who finished with two strikeouts, in the top of the fourth inning, giving up no runs on four hits while striking out two.
Blake Neleman (8-7) suffered the loss after 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
