KENNESAW, Ga. – Coming off a thrilling double-overtime victory, the Kennesaw state women's soccer team finds itself in the ASUN Conference championship for the second consecutive season. The Owls play for their third ASUN crown, and first since 2009, with a 1 p.m. match against Liberty University at Fifth Third Bank Stadium Saturday.
The Owls (8-7-0) and Flames (6-5-5) each won as the road team in the regular season with 1-0 decisions. KSU enters as the No. 2 seed from the North Division, and Liberty is the No. 4 seed.
KSU prevailed 1-0 Thursday night against FGCU in the semifinals. Sophomore Becky Contreras scored the golden goal in the 102nd minute from a Kathryn Schreck corner kick. Contreras found the back of the net for the second time this spring, and in as many games. She led the attack with nine shots and an impressive seven on goal, both season-highs.
As a team, KSU launched a season-high 23 shots and had nine on goal. Senior Erin Harris had seven shots.
Goalkeeper Dylan Pixton (7-6) earned her fifth clean sheet with numerous jaw-dropping stops. FGCU rattled off 16 shots, but Pixton built a fortress in goal with six saves. That brought her season total to 56, good for third in the conference. Liberty's Meldoy Jayroe is just ahead of Pixton with 58. However, the redshirt-sophomore is ahead of the LU goalie with a .778 save percentage.
Also, amongst the ASUN leaders, Schreck is tied for second with three assists. Harris is third with 37 shots and tied for sixth with five goals.
Collectively, the Owls are tied with Liberty for third place with 172 shots. KSU has allowed 20 goals, good for fourth, and LU has allowed 19.
The Owls continue to showcase their best at the right time of the season. The team's lone loss over the last 30 days came in overtime against Lipscomb Mar. 28. Meanwhile, the Owls have won seven of their last eight matches against ASUN opponents, and three-straight.
A win Saturday would give KSU a 12-9-5 all-time record in the ASUN tournament and serve as an achieved goal after the 2019 finale where the Owls and Lipscomb played to penalty kicks and the Bisons advanced.
