KENNESAW, Ga. – After opening Big South Conference play with a 24-19 victory, Kennesaw State swept the conference's weekly awards Monday afternoon.
The Owls knocked off Charleston Southern for the fourth consecutive season thanks to 24 unanswered points with key contributions from Jonathan Murphy, Bryson Armstrong, Nathan Robertson, and Tyler Scott.
Murphy claimed Offensive Player of the Week honors with an incredible performance off the bench. The sophomore engineered four scoring drives after entering in the second quarter. He totaled a game-high 27 rushes for 113 yards and a touchdown, marking his third career 100-yard rushing game. Murphy completed a career-high two passing touchdowns in 4-5 effort for 108 yards, including the game-winning pass to Caleb O'Neal en route to earning his first Big South weekly award.
Armstrong earned Defensive Player of the Week honors following a KSU-leading eight tackles Saturday. He totaled 2.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. His first sack was on a third down that forced a punt, and his second sack was for a nine-yard loss on first down. The senior paced a defense that held the Bucs to just 244 total yards. This marks the third Defensive Player of the Week honor for the linebacker.
Robertson collected the Special Teams Player of the Week nod with a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. The make was his first of the spring, and he was perfect on three PATs. The honor is the first of the junior's career.
Scott was named the Freshman of the Week with a three-tackle afternoon. It was the Jackson, Ga. native's second three-stop effort in as many games, in addition to also playing a role in limiting CSU to 84 rushing yards. The defensive lineman also recorded a tackle-for-loss for three yards when he brought down CSU's Jack Chambers on a 3rd-and-8 rushing play up the middle to force a punt late in the third quarter. KSU scored on the ensuing possession to move ahead, 24-7.
The Owls remain at home this weekend with a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday against non-conference foe Dixie State. The game serves as Homecoming and tickets are available here.
