QUICK HITS
» The Kennesaw State volleyball team closes out the regular season on the road this weekend at Lipscomb. The Owls are looking to make it a perfect 12-0 season and lock up the No. 1 overall seed in the ASUN conference tournament. The Bisons are currently second in the league's North Division just behind KSU. Lipscomb needs to sweep the weekend to overtake the Owls for first in the division.
» The Owls and Bisons are the only two teams in the ASUN to average over 14 kills per set with KSU ranked second averaging 14.06. KSU ranks 30th in the NCAA for kills per set with its current average on track to rank second in the KSU single-season record book. The Owls are also second in the league, 23rd in the country, with a .273 team hitting percentage. KSU is one of four teams in the league to record over 500 kills on the year with the top three teams having played at least two more matches than the Owls. Three players,
Lauren Chastang (3rd),
Emma Schurfranz (7th) and
Dani Ballou (9th), rank in the league's top-10 for kills per set. Schurfranz (.357) and
Claire Parsons (.292) also rank third and eighth respectively in the ASUN for hitting percentage.
» Freshman
Claire Parsons collected her third straight ASUN weekly award this past Tuesday receiving two of the last three Freshman of the Week awards as well as the league's Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Parsons earned her defensive award after totaling 14 blocks against North Alabama, including a career-high eight stuffs in KSU's second match. She collected another eight blocks this past weekend while hitting .387 for 14 kills against Liberty. The Marietta, Ga., native is one of six players in the league to record at least 40 blocks so far this season and is currently ranked fourth averaging 1.11 blocks per set. On the attack, Parsons has tallied 70 kills while hitting .292 on the year.
» KSU has given opposing teams fits from the service line so far this year averaging 2.06 aces per set to lead the conference and rank 18th in the country. The Owls have recorded double-digit aces three times this season including 13 against Liberty, one shy of the KSU single-match record. Four Owls have recorded at least 10 aces on the year led by
Lauren Chastang with 16. Chastang recently became the second Owl in program history to hit the century mark for career aces with 101. Chastang currently ranks third in the league for total aces followed by
Jessie Cohen and
Karlee Groover in a tie for eighth. If maintained, KSU's current per set average would set a new single-season record.
» Junior
Jessie Cohen continues to impress in her first full season as KSU's setter, racking up 398 total assists. Her current 11.06 assists per set average leads the ASUN and ranks 21st in the country. If maintained, it would mark the third straight season an Owl setter has averaged over 11 assists per set, ranking third on the KSU single-season record list. Cohen has also recorded 50 digs, 16 blocks and 14 kills on the year. As a team, KSU is second in the ASUN averaging 12.92 assists per set.
FLAVOR OF THE WEEK
The Owls have racked up the awards so far this season, earning at least one ASUN weekly award every week since beginning their season.
Freshman
Claire Parsons has won three straight weekly awards, earning two of the last three freshman of the week accolades as well as the league's defensive player of the week honor.
Over the last three weeks Parsons has racked up 27 blocks, averaging 1.29 per set, while hitting .388 for 42 kills. She hit over .400 in three of the six matches while tallying five aces and eight digs. Her defensive player of the week award marked only the second time in KSU history a freshman received such accolades.
Sophomore
Emma Schurfranz opened the season with back-to-back player of the week accolades. She hit over .500 in two of the first four matches, tallying 50 total kills and 17 blocks, logging at least four blocks in every match.
The following week KSU earned two of three conference accolades as
Lauren Chastang was named the league's player of the week while Parsons earned her first freshman of the week honor.
Chastang tallied 39 kills while hitting .341 at Liberty with 20 total digs. She opened the weekend slate recording her second double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs. Chastang followed up that performance with 22 kills, one shy of her career-high, and nine digs in Saturday's victory, hitting .362 in the match.
THE THUNDER ROLLS
Lauren Chastang has brought the thunder in the early part of the season, tallying 151 total kills, 78 digs, 19 blocks and 16 aces. She kicked off the year with her 33rd career double-double tying her career high with 23 kills while adding 11 digs in game one against Bellarmine.
She recently passed
Kelly Marcinek (2013-16) for third on the all-time career points record list, becoming just the third Owl in program history to record over 1,300 career points (1,314). Chastang looks to replace the current career record of 1,390 held by Sabrita Gulley (2007-10).
With 1,129 kills in her career Chastang is also one of five players in KSU history to surpass 1,000 career kills, currently ranked fourth. She needs just 112 more kills to break the all-time record for career kills.
If she can record 24 more digs this season, Chastang will become just the third Owl in program history to rank among KSU's top-10 for career kills and digs. She is currently tied for second on the team with 78 digs on the year.
The Bay Minette, Ala., native ranks second in the ASUN averaging 0.44 aces per set. After recording her 16th ace of the season, she became the second Owl in program history to hit the century mark for career aces with 101.
THE LOUISVILLE SLUGGER
Emma Schurfranz has had a hot hand in her sophomore season hitting .357 on the year to rank third in the ASUN. She has hit over .500 in three matches while being held to less than .300 in only three matches. If maintained, her current hitting percentage would set a new single-season record.
She is also seventh in the league averaging 3.5 kills per set having recorded double-digit kills in seven matches. On the defensive side, Schurfranz ranks 10th in the conference with 32 total blocks.
THE BLOCK IS HOT
The Owls have had a formidable presence at the net this season ranked third in the ASUN averaging 2.44 blocks per set. That average would set a new single-season record and mark just the fifth time in program history KSU has averaged over two blocks per set.
Seven Owls have logged at least 10 blocks on the year led by freshman
Claire Parsons with 40. Parsons (4th),
Emma Schurfranz (12th) and
Katie Crocker (13th) rank among the league's top-15 for blocks per set.
If maintained, Parsons 1.11 blocks per set average would rank third in KSU single-season history, making her one of six Owls all-time to average over one block per set in one season.
SETTING THE STAGE
Taking over as KSU's starting setter for the first time in her career,
Jessie Cohen opened her tenure with a bang in the Owls' season-opener, registering a career-high 53 assists.
She nearly earned her first career double-double as well adding a career-high nine digs to go along with six aces, a mark that tied the five-set program record.
Cohen has totaled 398 assists averaging 11.06 per set. That average currently leads the ASUN and ranks 21st in the country. If maintained, that mark would rank third in KSU single-season history.
ACE UP OUR SLEEVE
The Owls have been deadly from the service line this year, totaling 74 aces to rank second in the ASUN. KSU's 2.06 aces per set average ranks 18th in the NCAA.
Three Owls,
Lauren Chastang,
Jessie Cohen and
Karlee Groover, all rank among the ASUN's top-10 for total aces with Chastang ranked third and Cohen and Groover tied for eighth.
As a team, the Owls have recorded at least 10 aces in three matches this season, logging 13 at Liberty, a mark that is tied for second in KSU single-match history.
If maintained, KSU's current 2.06 per set average would set a new KSU single-season record.
Chastang recently became the second Owl in KSU history to reach the century mark for career aces (101) with
Karlee Groover (98) needing two more to join her.

After this weekend KSU will have a week off before hitting postseason play. The Owls will host ASUN quarterfinal action Saturday (Mar. 27).
