ATLANTA – The Kennesaw State softball team defeated Georgia Tech for the first time since 2017 as a two-run home run from
Taylor Cates helped the Owls earn a 4-1 decision at Mewborn Field Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets would take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after a solo home run from Tricia Awald.
KSU took the lead in the top of the third inning following a pair of RBI singles from
Brea Dickey and
Lexi Solorzano.
Peyton Elzey kept the Owls on top closing out the third with a three up three down inning.
A two-run home run from Cates gave KSU a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Melanie Bennett earned (3-4) earned the win with 3.1 innings of relief for the Owls. Bennett entered in the fourth inning with GT runners on first and second but got out of the jam unscathed thanks to a throw to the plate by
Marcela Lopez in center that gunned down a would-be scorer for the Yellow Jackets to close the inning.
Madison McPherson suffered the loss after 3.1 innings, two runs on three hits, one error and three strikeouts.
