Nation’s Top-Two Rushing Attacks Highlight FCS Opening Round

KENNESAW, Ga. Kennesaw State and Davidson collide in a first round matchup of the nation's top-two rushing offenses. The Owls look to continue their streak of having at least one win in each of their playoff appearances and extend their nine-game winning streak. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. inside Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

Top Storylines
  • The game is the first meeting in series history and will feature the number one and number two rushing offenses in the FCS. Davidson leads the nation averaging 348.4 YPG, while KSU averages 275.5 YPG.
  • Kennesaw State has won at least one game in each of the three years the team has made the FCS playoffs.
  • The Owls have claimed three Big South championships in the last five seasons. KSU went back-to-back in 2017 and 2018 and won again in 2021. The program has accumulated a conference record of 29-8 over its seven seasons.
  • Head coach Brian Bohannon moved into second place all-time in Big South career victories after a win against Jacksonville State. Bohannon currently has 62 wins and trails only Coastal Carolina's David Bennett at 63.
  • Quarterback Xavier Shepherd is in the national spotlight in two FCS statistical categories. His 19 rushing touchdowns are top in the nation, while his 10.4 PPG rank third. The quarterback also ranks first in the Big South in total points scored (114) and total touchdowns responsible for (33).
All-Conference Awards
  • Kennesaw State football received 15 all-conference honors after it posted a 10-1 record and an undefeated season in Big South Conference play.

  • 58 - KSU has been ranked in the top 25 for 58 straight weeks, dating back to week nine of the 2017 season.

After 11 weeks of play, the Owls rank in the top three in multiple FCS categories. These include:
  • 1st - fourth down conversion success rate (83.0%)
  • 1st - passing yards per completion (17.9 yds)
  • 1st - red zone defense (59.0%)
  • 2nd - rushing yards per game (275.5 YPG)

No other start-up program in college football history has more wins in its first five seasons than Kennesaw State with 48 victories.

Ranking Streak Record
Following the preseason polls by Stats FCS and the AFCA, KSU broke a record with 46 consecutive weeks in a top-25 poll. The streak broke a previous Big South Conference record of 45 weeks held by Coastal Carolina. The Owls have been ranked in one of the two polls for 58 consecutive weeks.
 
Clear Bag Policy
In an effort to provide a safer environment, enhance fan experience and significantly expedite entry into Fifth Third Bank Stadium, Kennesaw State adheres by a clear bag policy. Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" or one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar) are permitted in the stadium. Individuals may also carry a small clutch purse, no larger than 4.5" x 6.5", with or without a handle or strap. All clear bags and clutch purses will be screened prior to entry into the venue. All bags and purses not meeting the above requirements will not be permitted. Although permitted, childcare items, including diapers, must also be carried in an approved clear bag. Bags needed for medical reasons will be allowed and will need to enter through the Georgia Natural Gas gate to be checked.
