JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Kennesaw State volleyball made short work of Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon, claiming a second straight 3-0 sweep for its fifth straight win (25-23, 25-10, 25-13) in ASUN divisional crossover play on the UNF campus. The win moved the Owls to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in league action.
OWL OF THE GAME: Senior Lauren Chastang led the Owls for the second straight game, as she was the lone player to reach double-figures in kills with a game-high 10 while posting a .292 hitting percentage (10K-3E-24TA). She also posted four blocks, four digs and three service aces.
STAT OF THE GAME: KSU finished the day with a .247 hitting percentage (36K-13E-93TA), including .619 in the second set (14K-1E-21TA). Bellarmine meanwhile finished with a -.045 percentage after committing 24 attack errors (20K-24E-89TA).
SET ONE: This was the closest set of the day, with the Knights leading for the majority of the opening points. The Owls rallied back though to tie and then take the lead, thought Bellarmine wasn't done on their side either. After KSU went up 23-21, the Knights scored two straight to tie the set, but a kill from Claire Parsons and a McKinley Ferguson ace gave the Owls the two-point win.
SET TWO: The Owls held a 14-9 edge when they used runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to run away with set two in the 15-point win.
SET THREE: KSU built on the momentum of set two, jumping out to a 14-5 lead and the Owls cruised from there for the 12-point set win.
QUOTEABLE: "Proud of our team. We're preparing well and playing well. One more to go this weekend. "– KSU head coach Keith Schunzel
NOTES:
- The 46 total points scored by Bellarmine is the fewest allowed by KSU this season, and the lowest since allowing 42 by North Alabama in a 3-0 win on Feb. 28, 2021 in Kennesaw.
- KSU has won nine straight sets, dating back to a 3-1 win over North Florida on Oct. 17. That ties for the longest set win streak since last season during three straight 3-0 victories, which included the UNA win in the previous note.
- Other offensive stars included Emma Schurfranz (seven kills, five digs), Lanie Vantrease (six kills, two digs) and Claire Parsons (six kills). Jasmine Brown also added five kills and four blocks.
NEXT TIME OUT: The Owls close out the weekend on Sunday against Eastern Kentucky at 3 pm.
