Squads Share the Spoils in Sunday Showdown

KENNESAW, Ga. The Kennesaw State women's soccer team finished Sunday afternoon's matchup against the Jacksonville Dolphins with its first draw of the season, grabbing a point against divisional adversaries in a 1-1 result.

"It's kind of bittersweet," said head coach Benji Walton. "You always want to get three points with every game you play and when you leave two points on the pitch, it's a hard pill to swallow. Luckily we've got three more divisional games left, so there's plenty of points to be had. Hopefully we can get a little more consistent down the stretch."

Very little separated the two sides in the first half, with Ebony Clarke sought to expand on her run of good form with an early chance at the Jacksonville goal; however, her shot was fizzed narrowly wide.

The halftime whistle blew with both squads in a goalless stalemate, with the Owls outshooting the Dolphins 4-2.

It was Jacksonville who opened the scoring off of a free kick, with a Dolphin latching on to a loose ball for an easy slot in.

Less than ten minutes later, Agata Giani played a ball up from midfield that forced a Dolphin defender into a defensive miscue. Kendall Higgs got on the end of the pass and made a run toward the net, flicking the ball over her marker before burying the shot.

Walton on Higgs…
"She's one of the most technically sound players in our squad, for sure. She shows great instinct with her movement on and off the ball, recognizing situations and making decisions. She's more than capable of making that finish when she's given the opportunity. She's done a good job of being clutch for us this year."

Higgs' 82nd-minute equalizer sent the match into overtime, but the two ten-minute periods wasn't enough for either team to find a winner.

With the single point earned against Jacksonville, the Owls currently sit in second place in the ASUN's Eastern Division with four points.

Walton and the Kennesaw State women's soccer team will next face Stetson at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
