KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's power was on full display against St. Peter's as a program-tying eight doubles pushed the Owls over the Peacocks to secure a 15-7 victory.
Gage Vailes took the mound for his first collegiate start and pitched 2.2 innings. He settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning and finished with five strikeouts.
With the win, the Owls begin the season 2-0 in back-to-back seasons.
After the Peacocks took the first lead of the contest, the Owls answered with a pair of runs in the second inning off of the bats of
Alex Carballo and
Tyler Tolve. Carballo doubled to right-center field, before Tolve lined a single to score Colina.
Saint Peter's tied up the game in the third inning, but Kennesaw State retook the lead in the bottom of the frame when
Logan Fink scored
Justin Russell.
Kennesaw State put up a five-spot in the fifth inning to blow the game open. It began when Tolve scored
Ryan Smith and
Nick Colina with a single and continued when Norman drove in two with a single through the left side.
Fink smashed a double to end the scoring in the fifth when the redshirt freshman plated
Terence Norman to put the Owls on top, 10-4.
Saint Peter's scored three runs in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 10-7, but a five-run eighth inning sealed the deal for the Owls.
The Owls took advantage of a Peacock throwing error to score the first one before Tolve plated his fourth RBI of the game. Russell stroked a double to right center to score Tolve and put Kennesaw State on top, 13-7.
Hodges knocked in a pair to end the scoring at 15 and the Owls claimed the 15-7 victory.
Monty Horn picked up the win for the Owls, tossing three innings that yielded just one earned run.
Tolve was the offensive star for the Owls as he finished three-for-four with four RBI. Colina was impressive as well, as he ended the night three-for-three. Hodges, Carballo and Fink all finished with a pair of RBI.
The Owls return to the diamond tomorrow at 1 p.m. versus Cincinnati.
