KENNESAW, Ga.- It did not look like opening day for Kennesaw State baseball, as the offense exploded for 10 runs while the pitching staff allowed just one run in a 10-1 rout over St. John's on Friday night.
It was an
Alex Carballo three-run homer in the sixth inning that propelled the Owls to the win, as the moon shot extended the Kennesaw State lead to 5-1.
The Owls never trailed in the contest, scoring twice in the third inning after
Tyler Simon drove in Carballo and
Tyler Tolve singled to center field to plate
Marcerio Allen.
KSU's offense exploded in the seventh and eighth inning, scoring four combined runs. In the seventh, Carballo and
Nick Colina each drew walks with the bases loaded to push the lead to 8-1. In the eighth,
Justin Russell lasered the ball down the left-field line to score Tolve before
Garrett Hodges singled to right field to bring home Russell.
Ryan Kennedy was magnificent on the bump for the Owls, as the starter picked up the win. He finished with 5.0 innings and a strikeout, while allowing just three hits and zero earned runs.
The bullpen pitched well for the Owls, as
Luke Torbert and
Brison Finney combined for four innings. Finney punched out four batters and allowed just one hit in two innings of work.
Kennesaw State takes the diamond tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Saint Peter's at home.
