TOP STORYLINES
» The Kennesaw State men's basketball team opens its split weekend welcoming FGCU to the Convocation Center Thursday night for its very first Blackout game at 7 p.m. with the first 1,000 fans in attendance receiving a free black T-shirt. The Owls then head down to DeLand to challenge Stetson Saturday afternoon, marking the start of a three-game road swing for the Owls, their final road trip of the season.
»
Bryson Lockley recorded his third double-double of the season in KSU's last outing against Lipscomb, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lockley opened ASUN play with a double-double against the Ospreys, logging a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. He is the only Owl to average at least five rebounds (5.0) and five points (7.9) per game. Lockley leads the team and ranks tied for ninth in the ASUN with 13 blocks while second on the team for assists (29) and third for steals (18).
»
Tyler Hooker returned to his double-digit scoring ways after having his 11-game streak snapped at North Florida. Hooker led the Owls with 18 points against Lipscomb. He is averaging 14 points this year, 16 points in conference play, to rank seventh in the ASUN. Hooker is currently one of 10 Owls in program history to net over 1,300 career points (1,343), needing just 26 points to move into fifth on the all-time record list.Â
» The Owls are one of three teams in the ASUN this year to shoot over 70 percent from the free throw line.
Tyler Hooker leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference shooting 81.1 percent at the stripe while ranked fourth for total free throws made (79). If KSU can maintain its 70 percent shooting from the stripe, it would mark only the second time in DI history KSU would finish a season shooting over 70 percent at the free throw line.Â
THE MASKED SCORER
Redshirt senior
Tyler Hooker made his triumphant return in KSU's game against Lipscomb in January sporting some new headgear after missing four games due to an orbital fracture.
Hooker did not lose a step, netting 24 points against the Bisons. He has scored 10 or more points in all but four games this year, including four games with 20+ points. His 30 points in KSU's recent game against Jacksonville was the first time an Owl has netted 30 or more points since Hooker tied the single-game record with 36 points against Stetson last season.
He is currently averaging 14.0 points per game to rank seventh in the ASUN. Hooker also leads all active players with 32 assists and 23 steals while third for rebounds per game (4.2).
The Simpsonville, S.C., product reached 1,000 career points scored last season, and with 1,343 points in his career he is just the 10th player in KSU history to record over 1,300 career points. With 26 more points he will move into fifth on the career record list and with 57 more points he will become just the fifth player to net over 1,400 career points.
One of the Owls most formidable free throw shooters, he is 73-of-90 at the line this season for an 81.1 shooting percentage at the stripe. Hooker ranks seventh in the ASUN for shooting percentage and fourth for made free throws.
With 354 made free throws during his KSU career, Hooker is one of five Owls in program history to make over 300 free throws, currently ranked second on the career record list.Â
DOUBLE-DOUBLE VISION
Redshirt senior
Bryson Lockley has done it all for KSU, leading the team in multiple categories while ranked among the top three on the squad for nearly everything else. After securing his third double-double of the year against Lipscomb he is the only player to average at least five rebounds (5.0) and five points (7.9) per game on the year.
He leads the team with 13 blocks while ranked second for assists (29) and third for steals (18). Lockley's 13 blocks this year puts him in a tie for ninth in the ASUN standings.
The Houston, Texas native had arguably one of the best games of his career while recording a double-double in KSU's ASUN opener against North Florida. Lockley logged a career-high 23 points, 17 in the second half alone, to go along with 11 rebounds. He is the only player this year to record a double-double, with his first coming against Gardner-Webb (17 points and 12 rebounds).
FREE NINETY NINE
The Owls have been on point from the free throw line so far this season, ranked third in the ASUN with a .702 shooting percentage. KSU has shot over 80 percent from the stripe in six games this year.
Tyler Hooker ranks seventh in the league with an 81.1 shooting percentage from the free throw line while fourth for made free throws, sinking 73 so far this year.
Five Owls are currently shooting over 70 percent from the charity stripe with
Bryson Lockley's 73.1 percent placing him 12th in the ASUN.
If the Owls maintain their current shooting percentage it would rank second in KSU DI single-season history while marking only the second time in DI history the Owls would finish a season shooting over 70 percent from the stripe.Â
THE CAVALRY HAS ARRIVED
Wake Forest transfer
Jamie Lewis has provided a much-needed spark for KSU since becoming eligible against Wofford. Throughout his 12 games played Lewis is averaging 27.8 minutes, 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while third on the team with 16 assists.
Lewis is one of two players on the team to average double-digit points so far this year, having netted 10 or more points in six games including three games with 20 or more points.
He had one of the best games of his young career in KSU's outing at Lipscomb, nearly recording a double-double. Lewis earned career-highs for both points (24) and rebounds (8) while adding two assists and two steals.
The Atlanta, Ga., native has logged three three-pointers in four games, going 14-of-34 from beyond the arc so far this year. He leads the team shooting 41.2 percent from three-point range and is one of five Owls with at least 10 made treys on the year.
YOU GO UGO!
Sophomore
Ugo Obineke has taken his game to the next level over the past few weeks. After missing the first three games of the season due to injury, he has become one of two players to start in at least 19 games this year.
Obineke has netted double-figures in three of the last five games. The sophomore did not score more than seven points over his first five games, averaging 4.8 points per game, but has since raised his average to 9.4 points per game, the third highest average on the team.
The Rowlett, Texas native has been on fire from beyond the arc, leading the team with 24 made treys. Obineke drained a career-high four three-pointers against Stetson, finishing 4-of-7 from distance.Â
THE FILM ROOM
FGCU comes to Kennesaw riding a three-game losing streak, having won only one game in their last six. Three Eagles are currently averaging over 10 points per game, led by Caleb Catto's 12.2.
Junior Justus Rainwater has dominated the paint this year ranked in the ASUN's top-10 for both rebounds per game (5.6) and total blocks (34).
After hosting North Alabama Thursday night, Stetson looks to keep its momentum rolling against KSU Saturday having won six of their last seven games.
Freshman Rob Perry leads the team and ranks third in the ASUN averaging 16.2 points per game. As a team, the Hatters are second in the league averaging 6.2 steals per game.Â
