KENNESAW, Ga. – Coming off its second straight appearance in the ASUN Tournament championship final, the Kennesaw State women's volleyball team ups the ante in 2019.
The 2019 slate includes four teams who made the 2018 NCAA Tournament and seven schools who finished the 2018 season with a top-100 RPI.
"This is a fantastic schedule for our team," said Head Coach
Keith Schunzel. "For us to continue to push our program forward and continue to compete for conference championships, as we have been doing these last few years, it's really important we challenge ourselves like this. A schedule like this also gives us the best opportunity to potentially put or team in a position for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, another goal of ours that we are not shy speaking about."
With 11 opportunities to catch the Owls in action at the Convocation Center, KSU opens its home schedule against Georgia Tech on Tuesday (Sept. 3) at 7 p.m., one of six power five opponents for the Owls in 2019.
Following an exhibition tune-up at Jacksonville State on Aug. 15, KSU dives into the deep end participating in the Big Orange Bash Tournament hosted by Clemson. The Owls open the tournament against Wofford on Friday (Aug. 30), before taking on Georgia and Clemson, respectively, Saturday (Aug. 31).
The Owls then welcome the Yellow Jackets on Sept. 3 for their home-opener at 7 p.m., before heading to North Carolina for the High Point Invitational. KSU opens tourney play with its first-ever meetings against James Madison and Furman on Friday (Sept. 6) and Saturday (Sept. 7), respectively. The Owls close out the invite against hosts HPU on Sunday (Sept. 8).
KSU will host the Owl Invitational for the second straight season, welcoming 2018 NCAA Tournament team Samford along with South Alabama on Friday (Sept. 13) and Saturday (Sept. 14).
The Owls wrap up non-conference play with a tough stretch, facing three power five teams who finished with a top 100 RPI in 2018.
First KSU travels to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama Tuesday (Sept. 17) before taking part in the Gamecock Invitational, taking on Maryland Saturday (Sept. 21) and hosts South Carolina Sunday (Sept. 22) to close out non-conference play.
ASUN play kicks off two days later as the Owls take on NJIT (Sept. 24) in New Jersey, before hosting North Florida Friday (Sept. 27) and Stetson Sunday (Sept. 29) in their home conference openers.
KSU then bounces back-and-forth, traveling to Lipscomb (Oct. 4), hosting North Alabama (Oct. 11) and heading to FGCU (Oct. 13) before hosting Liberty (Oct. 18) and Jacksonville (Oct. 19) on back-to-back days.
After hitting the road to face North Alabama (Oct. 25) and North Florida (Oct. 27), the Owls open their final homestand of the year with NJIT (Oct. 29). The Owls cap off their home slate with Lipscomb (Nov. 2) and last year's ASUN regular season and tournament champions FGCU on Friday (Nov. 8) at 7 p.m.
KSU closes out the regular season with a three-game road swing through Stetson (Nov. 10), Jacksonville (Nov. 15) and Liberty (Nov. 17).
The 2019 ASUN Tournament opens on Thursday (Nov. 21) in DeLand, Fla.
"Our players want this and train for it, our coaches want this, and our fans want it," said Schunzel. "We'll be ready to compete."
