GREENVILLE, S.C. – A cold second half doomed the Kennesaw State women's lacrosse team as Furman outscored the Owls 10-1 in the second period to down KSU 17-7.
How it happened: In a very defensive start to Friday night's game, the Owls (4-7) maintained a 2-1 edge over the Paladins (5-6) 10 minutes into the game thanks to two goals from
Siena Gore. Furman fought back with four straight goals over the next six minutes to take a 5-2 lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.
Siena Gore brought an end to Furman's run with the Owls lone free position goal of the game at the nine-minute mark. Goals from
Anna Giulitto and
Emily Napierala, sandwiched around a goal from Furman, brought KSU back within one with five minutes still to play.
The two squads traded one more goal each before the half came to a close, with
Abby Squires netting a circus-style behind-the-back shovel shot with 50 seconds left to close out the half for KSU trailing 7-6. Seven of the 13 goals in the first half were scored with under 10 minutes to play. Furman recorded seven caused turnovers in the period compared to four for KSU.
The Owls could not seem to find the target in the second half going nearly 23 minutes without a goal as Furman proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 14-6 lead. Freshman
Chesslyn Lamar finally ended the drought for KSU, scoring her second career goal with 7:15 left to play.
The Paladins netted three more goals before the final whistle as Furman's keeper Courtney Baker recorded seven saves in the second period to quell the Owl attack. Baker finished the game with 11 total saves.
