KENNESAW, Ga. – A day after receiving a mini camp invite by the Tennessee Titans, former Kennesaw State University wide receiver
Justin Sumpter is headed out west, signing a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Rams.
Â
A two-time All-Conference selection, Sumpter helped Kennesaw State capture its second straight Big South Conference championship last fall in just its fourth year of existence. He becomes the third former Owl to appear in an NFL camp, joining
Darnell Holland who signed with the New Orleans Saints Saturday evening and
Dante Blackmon who landed with the Indianapolis Colts following the 2016 season.
Â
"This is an incredible opportunity for Justin to head out to Los Angeles and join a great organization,"Â said head coach
Brian Bohannon. "He has been an unbelievable impact player for us and has definitely earned an opportunity to compete at the next level. This is great exposure for our program to have two players sign with NFL teams and have a chance to earn a roster spot."
Â
As one of the most clutch wide receivers at the FCS level, Sumpter owns nearly every receiving record in program history, including receptions (111), receiving yards (1,989) and receiving touchdowns (21).
Â
He is one of 11 players in Big South Conference history with 20 touchdown receptions and Sumpter owns the top three spots in school history for single-game receiving yards.
Â
Two of his most memorable catches came in clutch moments, as he hauled in a one-handed touchdown on the final play before halftime at Liberty during the 2017 season in a 42-28 victory that was later featured as the No. 1 player on
SportsCenter's SCTop10.
Â
Sumpter then kept the game alive against No. 6 Jacksonville State at SunTrust Park last fall, making a fourth down circus catch on the sideline for 23 yards that was initially ruled incomplete but was overturned after review. The Owls went on to win the FCS Game of the Year 60-52 in five overtimes at the home of the Atlanta Braves.
Â
The Tyrone, Georgia native ended his career as the best wide receiver in program history, leading the Owls to back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs and 19 consecutive weeks ranked in the Top 25.
