NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State softball team worked its way in front of Lipscomb in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, but could not hang on to its respective leads as the Bisons powered back with a pair of big innings to down the Owls 7-2 and 6-4, respectively.
Game One: The Owls (26-26, 10-10) and Bisons (34-13-1, 12-4) found themselves in a scoreless deadlock in the early goings of game one, with a double from
Jessie Mullen providing KSU's best opportunity in the top of the third. KSU couldn't find a way to plate Mullen in the inning, but
Raleigh Williams came through in the fourth with a solo blast over the center field wall to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
The Bisons stampeded back in the bottom of the inning following a lead-off single and a walk. Lipscomb tied it up with a single on the next at-bat before a triple from the Bisons' Sarah Higgins made it 3-1. Lipscomb added to its lead following another single, eventually loading the bases with two outs. The Bisons plated two more runs off a single before KSU could close out the inning trailing 6-1.
KSU looked to rally in the sixth inning as
Hannah Thomason hit a lead-off single. The Owls managed to load the bases with two outs after drawing a pair of walks. Another walk brought around a runner, but that's all the Owls would manage down 6-2. Lipscomb added one more run with an RBI single in the top of the seventh to record the final score of 7-2.
Game Two: After a three-and-out inning for the Owls, Lipscomb jumped in front in the bottom of the first behind a two-run home run. KSU eventually responded in the top of the third inning as
Brea Dickey notched a lead-off single only to steal second shortly afterwards. Mullen then stepped up and blasted a home run over the left field wall to even the game 2-2. KSU wasn't done there as Thomason reached on an error and stole second. A single from
Christen Florence put runners on the corners before
Maddie Roth slapped a single through the left side to put KSU in front 3-2.
That lead was short-lived, though, as Lipscomb answered in the bottom of the inning as Graysen Gladden reached on an error, advancing to second on a wild pitch. After a single by Lipscomb's Hannah Devault, Gladden scored on a passed ball that also allowed Devault to reach third. Another single followed by a two-run home run gave the Bisons a 6-3 lead before KSU could close out the inning.
The Owls cut the lead down to two in the fourth as
Taylor Cates hit a single to right field, advancing to second on the throw. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Thomason hit an RBI single to score Cates from third and make it 6-4. That would be as close as the Owls would get as neither team could add to their totals throughout the next three innings with KSU leaving runners stranded in scoring positions in each inning.
